Alma's Brendan Ladd (141 pounds) and Zachary Cooper (149 pounds) each garnered All-America honors at the 2019 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships March 8-9 in Roanoke, Va. at the Berglund Center. Cooper placed fifth nationally in his weight class, while Ladd finished seventh. Both Alma wrestlers were All-MIAA honorees earlier this season.
Cooper went 4-2 at the national championship, tying the program record for season wins (36). On day two at the NCAAs, Cooper advanced to the consolation semifinals and won his fifth-place bout 4-2 after a first-period near fall.
Ladd went 2-1 on day one, including a 7-5 decision in his opening match. A 9-7 loss in Ladd's consolation match on Saturday moved the junior into the seventh-place match, where Ladd posted a 21-13 major decision to finish 32-3 on the season.
Olivet's Haydn Kinjorski (174 pounds) and Trevor Piggott (285 pounds) each went 1-2 in their NCAA Championship appearances. Kinjorski lost his opener, came back to win a pigtail match, and then was eliminated in his following match to conclude his season with a 24-8 records and All-MIAA accolades. Piggott won his opener but then dropped his next two matches to finish the year 26-9.
Adrian's Devon Pingel (184 pounds) went 0-2 in his first appearance at the national championship, finishing with a 28-8 season record that included nine pins and All-MIAA honors.
The 2019 season ended a 35-year hiatus of wrestling being sponsored as an MIAA sport.
Augsburg captured the 2019 NCAA Division III team title, ending a three-year championship streak by Wartburg.
