Around the MIAA

Adrian (5-2, 1-1)

The Adrian College women’s lacrosse team opened conference play last week by beating Alma on the road before falling to Calvin at home. The Bulldogs were shorthanded for both games as part of the team was still competing in the ACHA National Tournament. Senior Annie Rice had eight points for the third straight game in Wednesday’s 14-7 win over Alma and she picked up three points in Saturday’s 16-5 loss to Calvin. Sophomore Gwyneth Carlson continues to lead the team in goals, scoring six last week to bring her season total to 23.


Albion (6-3, 1-0)

Darcy Muns (Lake Orion, Mich.) scored seven goals, dished out four assists and scooped seven groundballs in the two weekend contests. A junior, Muns has scored 60 career goals…Chrystelle Lopez (Van Nuys, Calif.) added four goals and four assists and controlled the draw 11 times…Abby Sheklow (La Crescenta, Calif.) produced six goals and five groundballs…Carly Schwarz (Clinton Township, Mich.) finished the weekend with four goals, two assists, eight groundballs and five draw controls.

Alma (3-5, 0-2)

The women's lacrosse team dropped games Adrian and Saint Mary's to open the conference season. Junior goalie Allie Ray (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) moved closer to the program's all-time save record. Ray has 464 career saves and needs four more to pass Stephanie Herman. Junior midfielder Olivia Benoit (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) moved into sole possession of fifth place on Alma's all-time goal-scoring list with 70. Herman is 13 away from fourth-place Shelby Frazer.


Calvin (6-3, 1-0)

Calvin went 2-0 on the week, defeating Aquinas 21-1 and then downing Adrian 16-5 in its its conference opener on Saturday. In the win over Aquinas, senior Genevieve Schneemann got loose for eight goals while freshman Megan Gilbert had four. On Saturday, Calvin jumped out to a quick lead at Adrian and built an 12-2 halftime advantage. Calvin sealed the win with three late goals. Schneemann finished the game with six goals while Gilbert had three.


Hope (6-2, 1-0)

The Hope College women's lacrosse team matched its second-longest all-time win streak of four after defeating Aquinas College at home March 28, 18-6, and winning the MIAA opener at Olivet March 30, 25-2. Against Aquinas, Sophomore attacker Rachel Elder (Grand Rapids, Mich.) finished the game with a team-high four goals. Against Olivet, freshman attacker Bridgette Lay (Ottawa Hills, Ohio) scored a career-high four goals.

Kalamazoo (2-6, 0-0)

The Kalamazoo College women's lacrosse team concluded its spring break trip to California with a 19-17 victory over Whittier after falling to Chapman 15-8 earlier in the week. Sophomore Rachel Madar led Kalamazoo with 11 goals and one assist in the two contests. Madar also secured 20 draw controls for Kalamazoo. Senior Amanda Moss added six goals and two assists over the week. Georgie Andrews picked up her first win in goal for Kalamazoo by making 13 saves against Whittier. Kalamazoo returns to action Tuesday, April 2 at Hope.


Olivet (0-4, 0-1)

The Olivet College women's lacrosse team opened MIAA play with a 25-2 loss to Hope. It was also the home-opener for the Comets, as their only home games this season are four MIAA games.


Saint Mary's (5-4, 1-0)

The Belles went 2-0 on the week with a 21-10 win over Carthage and a 22-1 MIAA victory at Alma. Erin Doyle (14 goals, 3 assists, 8 caused turnovers) and Kate Kelly (10 goals, 6 assists, 13 ground balls) led a Saint Mary's side with nine different point scorers in the two games.


Trine (4-5, 0-1)

The Thunder dropped both of their contests during the week. They opened with a tough loss to Ohio Northern by the score of 15-9. Sophomore Kristin John (South Bend, Ind.) led the way in the contest with five goals. They then were defeated in their MIAA opener against Albion by the score of 18-5. The Thunder currently sit at 4-5 for the season.
