Albion to face Hope in MIAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament Championship

Hope 13, Saint Mary's 12

Hope took a 7-3 lead at the half and withstood a second-half rally by top-seeded Saint Mary’s Wednesday afternoon to defeat the Belles, 13-12. Hope (11-5) becomes the first No. 4 seed in MIAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament history to advance to the tournament championship game.

After Saint Mary’s came back to score seven of the first eight goals of the second half to take a 10-8 lead with 13:02 to play, Hope buckled down and scored the game’s next three goals, taking an 11-10 lead with 3:28 remaining in regulation.

The two teams then swapped goals as the half wound down, resulting in a 12-12 tie with 1:30 to play. From there, Hope’s Carly Pieri converted with 52 seconds left to give the Flying Dutch a 13-12 lead; on the ensuing possession, Hope’s Paige Wilmer caused a key turnover as the Flying Dutch then ran out the clock.

Hope’s Pieri finished with a team-best four goals, while Rachel Elder and Madison McCreery each added three goals.

Saint Mary’s (12-6) was led by five goals from Kate Kelly.


Albion 13, Calvin 10

Albion scored the game's first three goals and owned a 9-3 halftime lead on the way to defeating Calvin Wednesday evening, 13-10. With the win as the top-seeded team remaining in the tournament, Albion will host Hope Saturday, May 4 in the MIAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament title tilt at 5 p.m.

A balanced attack that featured six Albion players in the goal-scoring column helped the Britons (13-4). Chrystelle Lopez finished with five points on two goals and a game-high three assists; Destiny Okon and Carly Shwartz each tallied three goals.

Defensively for Albion, Alexis Robinson made 13 saves on 23 shots faced; the Britons had an 8-2 advantage in caused turnovers.

Calvin (11-7) was led by Megan Gilbert's four goals to go with three ground balls.
