A dynamic Hope College basketball duo — Olivia Voskuil and Kenedy Schoonveld — are also now teammates on the 2021 College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America Teams.

Both are receiving the CoSIDA Academic All-America distinction for the first time — with Voskuil one of five second-team honorees and Schoonveld one of five third-team honorees. A total of 15 Division III women’s basketball student-athletes were voted Academic All-Americans by the CoSIDA membership. Career statistics were the criteria for selection.

It is the fifth time two Hope College teammates have both receive CoSIDA Academic All-America honors within the same season. They join:

  • 2015 — Volleyball’s Jayne Kessel and Lauren Hazekamp
  • 2010 — Men’s Track and Field’s John Donkersloot and Jeff Minkus
  • 1986 — Football’s Tim Chase and Dan Stid
  • 1980 — Football’s Greg Bekius and Paul Damon

Head coach Brian Morehouse said both Voskuil and Schoonveld are worthy CoSIDA Academic All-Americans.

Off the court, Voskuil studied civil engineering at Hope; she has been accepted into the University of Michigan’s Master’s program for Engineering. Schoonveld studied social work; she has been accepted into Baylor University’s Master’s program for Social Work.

On the court, Voskuil and Schoonveld helped the Flying Dutch to back-to-back undefeated seasons and a 45-0 record the past two seasons. Both made the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-America Team this season, with Schoonveld a repeat selection.

Voskuil (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian HS) led the MIAA in steals at 2.3 per game and finished second in blocked shots at 2.1 per game. The forward also contributed 9.3 points per game and a team-leading 6.3 rebounds per game. She earned her third MIAA Defensive Player of the Year honors this season.

“Olivia has excelled in the rigorous engineering program while also excelling athletically. Her ability to manage her time in all facets of her life is noteworthy,” Morehouse said. “One of the things I encouraged Olivia to remember when she was deciding on college was she could be great at it all.  She didn't have to cut corners in one phase of her life to excel in another. She has lived into that opportunity each semester.”

Schoonveld (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian) topped the Flying Dutch in scoring at 10.2 points per game while shooting 48.8 percent from the field. The guard is ranked 10th all-time with the Flying Dutch with 1,112 points.

“Kenedy has done a fabulous job of balancing the demands of the social work program and the rest of her commitments,” Morehouse said. “Balancing academic, spiritual, social, and athletics is a challenge. To do it at the level she has accomplished is worthy of recognition. She will be an amazing student at the next level and I look forward to seeing where she lands professionally.”

Voskuil and Schoonveld are the fifth set of Hope College teammates to claim CoSIDA Academic All-America honors within the same season. They join:
