Hope, Trine Dominant in Semifinals to Advance to MIAA Tournament Championship

In a rematch of the last two Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Women's Basketball Tournament championship games, Hope and Trine will play for an NCAA Championship automatic berth Saturday night at DeVos Fieldhouse after both top-seeded teams were victorious Friday night in semifinal action.

To note, both the 2018 and 2019 title games went into overtime: Hope prevailed in one overtime in 2018, 68-62, while Trine was the winner in 2019 in two overtimes, 70-65.


Trine 75, Albion 50

Trine, ranked No. 24 nationally by d3hoops.com, held Albion to just seven percent shooting in the first quarter to set the tone in the Thunder's 75-50 MIAA Women's Basketball Tournament semifinal victory Friday (Feb. 28). 

Trine (21-5) featured a one-two scoring attack from Katy Steers and Kayla Wildman. Steers had a game-tying high 20 points along with a game-best six assist to guide the Thunder, while Wildman registered 19 points, in part to a 5-for-5 performance from three-point range.

For the game, the Thunder shot 51 percent from the field while the Trine's stingy defense held Albion to 29.1 percent shooting on the night, including just 15 percent from three-point distance.

Albion (21-6) benefitted from a 20-point performance by Rain Hinton, who added eight rebounds in the loss.


Hope 78, Calvin 46

Hope took control in the second quarter of their semifinal contest with Calvin, outscoring the Knights 27-4 in the stanza on the way to a 49-15 halftime lead, which lifted the Flying Dutch to a 78-46 semifinal win Friday night.

Hope (26-0) registered 32 points off Calvin turnovers for the game, including 23 in the first half. Fourteen players found the scoring column for the Flying Dutch, led by Kenedy Schoonveld and Meg Morehouse who each tallied 14 points. Olivia Voskuil and Jessica Moorman also scored in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Calvin (17-10) committed 30 turnovers facing Hope's stiffling defense. The Knights were led offensively by Kara Minderhoud's game-high 18 points.
