Trine and Hope women’s basketball advance to Sweet Sixteen

MIAA - Following wins in the first and second rounds of the 2020 NCAA Division II women’s basketball tournament, Trine and Hope are still dancing. Both are set to resume their run in the tournament on Friday.

Trine

Trine (23-6) sealed up their second trip to the Sweet Sixteen in four years on Saturday, dominating Redlands in a 69-49 win in the second round of the tournament. Senior Katy Steers led the Thunder with 23 points, knocking down 8-12 shots from the field.

“For us to be in the Sweet Sixteen two times in the last four years is a real testament to them and my staff,” said Trine head coach Andy Rang. “Hopefully, we can keep this run going.”

Trine will face host Bowdoin in its Sweet Sixteen matchup on Friday at 7:00 p.m. in Brunswick, Maine.

Hope

Despite trailing by nine points late in the game against Illinois Wesleyan in its second-round matchup, Hope managed to rally and outscore the Titans 14-2, pulling out a 72-69 victory.

With the win, the Flying Dutch stay a perfect 29-0 on the season. Junior Kenedy Schoonveld led Hope with 20 points, followed closely by junior Olivia Voskuil with 17 points.

“We’re just thrilled to be moving on,” said Hope head coach Brian Morehouse. “I’m proud of our players and I thought they were really resilient today.”
