Around the MIAA

Adrian (3-1, 0-0)

Adrian had a 1-1 week on the road, falling at first-ever opponent Chatham, 75-66, on Tuesday before whipping Illinois Tech, 84-46, on Saturday…sophomore Sha’Trice Graves leads the MIAA with 3.8 blocked shots per game, is fourth in rebounding (9.3 average) and ranked fifth in field goal percentage (52.2)…leading scorers are senior Ashley Morris and junior Shannon Garvey at 15.5 (fifth in MIAA) and 13.3 points (10th in MIAA) per outing…Morris has made 24 of 41 field goals for a 58.5 percent clip, which is second in the conference...she’s also third with 13 assists…Adrian is yielding only 57.5 ppg and has a 6.0 rebounding margin—both for third in the MIAA…the Bulldogs are 3-1 for the first time since the start of the 2009-10 season.


Albion (3-0, 0-0)

G/F Emily Bernas (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) was the most valuable player of the Main View Tip-Off Tournament at Manchester University last week. She scored 12 of her career-high 28 points in the third quarter to lead Albion to the first round victory over Muskingum. For the game, she was 10-21 FG and 6-6 FT. She added six rebounds and two steals…Rain Hinton (Fort Wayne, Ind./Woodlan) scored in double figures in both games to achieve a place on the all-tournament team. Hinton hit 8-of-16 shots from the field for 20 points in the championship game against Bethany…Hinton fell one rebound shy of a double-double (15 points and 9 rebounds) against Defiance last Tuesday…G/F Maija Gillum (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) contributed 14 points off the bench against Bethany…F Evelyn Wischmeyer (Lake Orion, Mich.) stuffed the box score with 10 points, eight rebounds, five assists and a block against Defiance.

Alma (2-2, 0-0)

The Scots earned their first and second victories of the season with wins over Bluffton University (Ohio) and MacMurray College (Ill.). In the home opener Monday (Nov. 12) junior guard Hannah Thelen (Pewamo, Mich./Pewamo-Westphalia) had a double-double with 14 points and a career-high 15 rebounds as Alma defeated the Beavers, 67-61. Sophomore forward Jessie Jordan (Mason, Mich./Williamston) came off the bench Saturday (Nov. 17) against the Highlanders to score a career-high 19 points in the 82-71 victory. The game was at Hope College as part of their Tip-Off Classic. The Scots also fell to Benedictine (Ill.), 59-51, in Holland Friday (Nov. 11). Between the two games this past weekend, junior guard Madison Hill (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) scored 23 points and had 11 rebounds and seven assists in 87 minutes played. Hill was named to the all-tournament team.

No. 3/3 Hope (2-0, 0-0)

Hope opened the 2018-19 season with two home wins and the championship from the Tip-Off Classic the Flying Dutch hosted at DeVos Fieldhouse. On Saturday, Hope defeated unbeaten Benedictine (Ill.), 69-50, behind a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds from Tournament MVP and senior forward Francesca Buchanan (Grant, Mich./Sparta). Sophomore guard Kenedy Schoonveld (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian) chipped in 10 points en route to all-tournament honors. On Friday, Hope down MacMurray (Ill.), 109-31, in the highest scoring game at DeVos Fieldhouse. Sophomore guard Jess Moorman (Northville, Mich./Northville) led a balanced effort with 13 points.


Kalamazoo (0-2, 0-0)

The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team lost 80-48 at Goshen College on Tuesday. Kaytlyn Tidey led the Hornets in scoring with 18 points and four rebounds. Amanda Moss scored 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting with four steals. Sierra Fraser added seven points with five rebounds while Georgie Andrews scored six points with five rebounds and three assists off the bench. Kalamazoo's next game is at home against Manchester on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 11 a.m.


Olivet (2-1, 0-0)

The Olivet College women's basketball team beat Lourdes (Ohio) University, 70-54, in a non-conference contest Nov. 15 inside The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.  Olivet plays an exhibition contest next Tuesday, Nov. 20, at Davenport University. The next official game is Monday, Nov. 26, at home against Manchester (Ind.) University. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.


Saint Mary's (2-2, 0-0)

The Belles went 1-2 on the week with a win at Illinois Tech last Tuesday before a pair of setbacks at the Paul F. Knueppel Classic at Wisconsin Lutheran. Giavanna Paradiso averaged 13.0 points and 7.7 rebounds over that three-game span and was named to the all-classic team at Wisconsin Lutheran. Jade Mosier paced Saint Mary's in the win at Illinois Tech with 13 points, and Bella Dugas recorded her first collegiate double-double against the Scarlet Hawks.
