Around the MIAA

Adrian (9-14, 5-9)

Fighting for a MIAA postseason berth, Adrian hosts nationally-ranked Hope (Wednesday) and travels to Alma (Saturday) in its final regular season games this week…sophomore Sha’Trice Graves surpassed 100 career blocked shots in a 46-44 loss to Olivet…with three against the Comets, Graves now has 102 blocks to tie Tricia Clark (1993-97) for second place on the Bulldogs all-time chart…Graves already is the single-game and -season record holder for the school…Adrian celebrated Senior Day, Pink Ribbon Awareness Day and National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Saturday…Graves is first in the MIAA in blocked shots (102) and second in rebounding average at 8.8 rpg, helped by a career-high 17 boards versus the Comets…in only 13 minutes of action, freshman post Addison Bergman tied her career-high with nine points and pulled down seven rebounds…Ashley Morris, who has 900 career points, is ranked third with a .765 free throw percentage, sixth in the conference with 55 assists, seventh with 13.6 points per game and ninth with a .455 field goal percentage.


Albion (16-7, 8-6)

Rain Hinton (Fort Wayne, Ind.) averaged 21.3 points in three games last week, shooting 54 percent (22-41) from the field. She also pulled down 8.0 rebounds per game…Hinton scored 28, shooting 8-11 from the field and 12-15 from the line, at Adrian; Hinton poured in 23, shooting 9-16 from the field and 5-6 from the line, vs. Alma.

Alma (12-11, 7-7)

The Scots had a successful week with victories at Calvin on Monday (Feb. 4) and Albion on Wednesday (Feb. 6). Senior forward Madeline Barnauskas (Livonia, Mich.) scored a season-high 21 points in the 62-51 win over the Knights. Sophomore center Jeny Brandt (Escanaba, Mich.) added 10 points and 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season as Alma earned its first regular-season sweep against Calvin since the 2008-09 season. The Scots then triumphed over the Britons by a score of 60-58 in comeback fashion. Trailing by 11 in the fourth quarter, Alma reeled off a 22-9 run down the stretch to earn the win over the MIAA's third-place team. Heading into the final week of the regular-season the Scots are tied for fourth in the league and could finish as high as third with two more wins.

No. 8/10 Hope (20-3, 12-2)

The Flying Dutch defeated Calvin at home and Saint Mary's on the road to reach the 20-win mark for the 21st consecutive season. Sophomore forward Mallory Gerber (Schaumburg, Ill.) averaged 11.5 points per game over the last two games to lead the Flying Dutch.

Kalamazoo (0-23, 0-14)

The Hornets fell to Olivet (71-56) and Calvin (75-61) last week. In Wednesday's loss to Olivet, forward Georgie Andrews scored a career-high 24 points while collecting 10 rebounds en route to her third double-double of the season. In the loss to Calvin, the Hornets saw themselves in the lead heading into the fourth quarter before falling in the final 10 minutes. Senior Amanda Moss led the way with 21 points and six steals. Kaytlyn Tidey added 15 points and four steals. Kalamazoo will head to Albion on Wednesday, Feb. 13 for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.


Olivet (8-15, 4-10)

The Comets posted a 2-1 record last week. After losing at Trine on Monday night in a reschedule game, the Comets bounced back to beat Kalamazoo, 71-56, on Wednesday night and Adrian, 46-44, on Saturday afternoon. Against Kalamazoo, senior Shawnee Dame drained 6-of-13 field goals and 3-of-6 free throws for a team-high 16 points. Eight of Dame's nine rebounds were off the offensive glass. Sophomore Fayth Talbert scored 14 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots. Senior Daitriona Bonds came off the bench to score 13 points. Against Adrian, Olivet scored the final five points of the game to stun the Bulldogs. Dame and Talbert finished the game with 10 points apiece. Talbert pulled down a team-best 12 rebounds. The 46 points scored was the fourth-lowest points in school history in a win.


Saint Mary's (10-13, 7-7)

The Belles fell twice as they squared off against the top two teams in the MIAA last week. Saint Mary's stayed close to No. 7 Trine throughout much of the contest until a fourth-quarter run by the Thunder distanced the home side from the Belles. Giavanna Paradiso led all players with 23 points after shooting 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) from the floor. On Saturday against No.8 Hope, Paradiso again paced all players with 18 points while also collecting three steals and five rebounds.


No. 7/5 Trine (22-2, 15-0)

Trine remained undefeated in MIAA play and secured the outright regular-season conference championship, it's third consecutive regular-season title (shared or outright)...senior Brandi Dawson averaged 20.0 ppg. while shooting 62.1 percent for the week to lead the Thunder.
