Alma, Mich. - Sami Stormont has agreed to become the next head coach of the Alma College women's basketball program, as announced by Director of Athletics Steven Rackley on Thursday (May 23).

"We're very excited to have Sami become our new head women's basketball coach," said Rackley. "We've seen her grow as an individual and as a coach these past two years and believe she has the tools to succeed. We're eager to see where she can continue to take the program."

"I couldn't be more thankful to President Abernathy, Steven Rackley, Sarah Dehring, and the search committee for giving me this opportunity. I am so proud of the turn around this program has made in the time I've been here and plan to keep it moving in the right direction. The young ladies on this team are hungry and eager to compete and being able to lead them is truly a privilege. I cherish the many memories I've made in my time here, Alma has truly become my second home and I can't wait to experience many more. Go Scots!"

"I'm thrilled Coach Stormont has been named the next women's basketball coach here at Alma College," said head men's basketball coach Ryan Clark. "Her dedication, drive and excitement for the program are key reasons it has seen recent success and I am excited to watch her build it into a top program in the MIAA."

Twice the interim head coach for the women's basketball team, Stormont was initially hired in June 2017 to be the program's lead assistant. Over that two-year span, the Scots totaled 20 wins, 12 of which came in the conference, and reached the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Semifinals for the first time since 2006. Alma's 15 wins in the 2018-19 season are the most in the last 16 years.

Stormont has been heavily involved in the program's recruiting efforts since her arrival. She was a member of two coaching staffs that brought in 12 incoming players, including seven players who played at least 10 minutes a game this past season.

Stormont has also been the head coach of Alma's junior varsity women's basketball program for the past two seasons. Other tasks Stormont has had as the lead assistant coach include running and facilitating practice, scouting opponents with players and producing gameplans.

Stormont graduated from Northwood University in 2017 with a degree in marketing and management. She was also a four-year member of the women's basketball program and had worked in Northwood's sports information office since September 2015. In addition, Stormont has been a counselor and basketball coach at the Boys and Girls Club in Royal Oak for nearly seven years.
