No. 3 Hope Women's Basketball Handles Nonleague Challenge, Tops Rochester

The third-ranked Hope College women's basketball team used a break in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic schedule to prepare for potential NCAA Tournament play next month.

The unbeaten Flying Dutch figured out their opponent quickly and marched to a 92-41 win against Rochester College on Wednesday at DeVos Fieldhouse.

Hope improved to 22-0 overall after the nonleague win.

Nonleague games at this point of the season are difficult, Hope coach Brian Morehouse said.

"You don't have the rhythm of a normal league game where you have a working knowledge of the team you're going to play against," Morehouse said. "We likened this to a quick turnaround in a NCAA tournament game as far as you don't know your opponent. You got to learn your sets real quickly, learn their personnel real quickly. I think we did a great job with that."

Senior Maura McAfee of Midland, Michigan (Midland HS) led a balanced scoring attack by totaling a game-high 15 points. McAfee became the fourth Hope player to eclipse 1,300 points during her career. She has 1,304 points after 112 games.

Thirteen of Hope's 14 dressed players scored against Rochester, which had defeated two of the three MIAA opponents it faced this season.

Freshman forward Francesca Buchanan of Grant, Michigan (Sparta HS) added 11 points off the bench against the NAIA opponent.

The Flying Dutch broke open the game by outscoring Rochester (13-13 overall) by a 27-6 margin during the second quarter and taking a 43-17 halftime lead.

Hope forced 33 turnovers. McAfee matched her season with six steals in 20 minutes of action while also totaling four blocks.

The Flying Dutch return to action on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 3 p.m. against Albion at DeVos Fieldhouse.

Hope can clinch a share of the MIAA championship with the victory. The Flying Dutch hold a two-game lead over second-place Calvin with three games remaining.
