Fast start sends Albion to victory

ADRIAN, Mich. – Albion College scored the first nine points of the game and it never looked back in gaining a 76-65 victory over Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Adrian College at the Merillat Sport & Fitness Center.

"It was a good team win for us on the road," Albion Head Coach Doreen Carden said after her team improved to 5-10 overall and 2-5 against league rivals. "A lot of kids showed good effort defensively and on the boards."

Adrian made only one run all day as Antoinea McElroy scored five points as the Bulldogs trimmed the margin to three, 11-8, with 4 ½ minutes left in the first quarter.

Albion reeled off the next 12 points to seize control. Emily Zgoda buried the first of her five 3-point field goals on the day as the Britons led 23-8 early in the second quarter.

Albion shot 50 percent from the field (16-of-32) in the first half as it led 42-24 at the break.

Albion led by as many as 25 in the third quarter and it maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the game.

Darian Payne produced her eighth double-double of the season with 18 points and 15 rebounds. She connected on 8-of-19 shots from the field. Zgoda added a career-high 17 points and Oreyanna Curry chipped in with 12 points. Erin Nelson gave Albion a lift off the bench with eight points and eight rebounds.
