Britons feed off offense

ALBION, Mich. – Darian Payne and Emily Zgoda carried Albion College on a 9-0 run late in the first quarter as the Britons overcame an 11-point deficit and went on to record a 73-65 victory over Alma College in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's basketball action.

Albion made just two of its first seven shots in falling behind 15-4. Payne and Zgoda produced two baskets apiece in the final three minutes of the first quarter and the Britons trailed 15-13 at the end of the period.

"We fed off our offense. Once we started making shots it was a chain reaction," Albion Head Coach Doreen Carden said after her team improved to 4-8 overall and 1-3 against league rivals.

Oreyana Curry tacked on a three-point basket and Payne added a layup as Albion gained an 18-15 lead early in the second quarter. There were six lead changes in the quarter as Alma held a 34-32 lead at halftime.

Albion outscored Alma, 21-13, in the third quarter.

Zgoda's three-point basket gave Albion a 58-50 lead early in the fourth quarter and the Britons led by at least four the rest of the way.

Payne fell a rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with 17 points and nine rebounds. She made 6-of-10 shots from the field and she was 5-of-6 from the line.

Zgoda, who connected on four shots from three-point range, finished with a career-high 15 points. Curry also reached double figures with 12.

Kaitlyn Kendall led Alma with 17 points. Kassidi Adams contributed 11.

Albion continues league play Saturday with a 1 o'clock game at Trine University.
