Hope Women's Basketball Uses 38-0 Run To Cruise Past Adrian

A 38-0 run made the return home to chilly Holland from warm Florida worth it for the Hope College women's basketball team.

The unbeaten and nationally ranked Flying Dutch marched to a 90-57 against visiting Adrian College Saturday at DeVos Fieldhouse after holding their Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association scoreless for nearly a 10-minute stretch.

Hope improved to 12-0 overall and 4-0 in MIAA play. The Flying Dutch moved one-half game ahead of idle Calvin in the league standings.

Senior forward Maura McAfee of Midland, Michigan (Midland HS) led all scorers with 19 points. In just 14 minutes, McAfee shot 80 percent from the field (8-of-10) while sinking her only 3-point attempt and both foul shots.

McAfee, pictured, also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to give her 837 for her career. She needs 10 more to pass Amanda Kerkstra (1999-2003) for third place all-time at Hope.

McAfee scored eight points to help the Flying Dutch break open a close game in the second quarter.

Adrian pulled within 19-18 on Marissa Cotton's 3-pointer 39 seconds into the second quarter, but the Bulldogs did not score the rest of the half and the first 2 1/2 minutes of the third quarter.

Hope reeled off the next 38 points on a run that started with McAfee's layup at 9:03 of the second quarter and ended on a 3-pointer from junior forward Elizabeth Perkins of Eaton Rapids, Michigan (Lansing Christian HS).

The Flying Dutch forced 10 of Adrian's 29 turnovers during this decisive stretch.

Thirteen different players scored for Hope.

Perkins and freshman forward Francesca Buchanan of Grant, Michigan (Sparta HS) chipped in 10 points apiece.

Senior guard Autumn Anderson of Dorr, Michigan (Wayland HS) and junior guard Angelique Gaddy of Caledonia, Michigan (Grand Rapids South Christian HS) added eight points apiece.

The Flying Dutch totaled 20 assists. Gaddy totaled a game-high five to lead a group of nine Hope players with at least one.

Next up for the Flying Dutch are two MIAA road games, including a Wednesday visit to Saint Mary's.
