Britons enjoy big stage

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Albion College shot a season best 54 percent from the field in sailing to an 88-47 victory over the University of Michigan-Dearborn in a non-conference women's basketball game played at the Crisler Center.

Sophia Sanfilippo scored six of her career-high 19 points and Oreyana Curry and Emily Zgoda knocked down three-point baskets as Albion ripped off a 21-2 run to gain a 27-8 lead midway through the second quarter.

Albion held a 41-18 lead at halftime and it outscored Dearborn 47-29 in the second half.

Sanfilippo, a first-year frontcourt player who prepped at Forest Hills Central High School, scored on 8-of-9 shots from the field. She also pulled down eight rebounds.

Zoe Wilson added seven points, and Zgoda six off the bench.

"We had a lot of contributors today. The bench brought a lot of energy and gave us an early boost," Albion Head Coach Doreen Carden said.

Curry led the starting unit with 15 points. Jay Bard and Olivia Savage chipped in with 14 and 11 points, respectively.

"It was a great experience and opportunity for our team to play at Crisler," Carden said. "I'm glad we took advantage of it by playing well."

Albion will have a week off to celebrate the holidays. The Britons return to action with Dec. 29-30 games in the Chapman (Calif.) Winter Classic.
