Kalamazoo stuns Albion

ALBION, Mich. – Kelsey Adamski scored nine of her 19 points in the third quarter as Kalamazoo College overcame a 17-point deficit to stun Albion College, 66-63, in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's basketball action.

Oreyana Curry and Darian Payne led Albion on a 14-5 run over the final 4 ½ minutes of the second quarter as the Britons surged to a 36-24 lead at halftime.

Erin Nelson tacked on a pair of baskets, Payne converted a layup and Emily Zgoda knocked down a three-point basket as Albion extended the margin to 45-28 with seven minutes left in the third quarter.

Albion made just two shots the rest of the quarter and Kalamazoo seemingly could not miss as it knocked down jumpers in transition.

Kalamazoo trimmed the margin to one, 50-49, after three quarters and it wrested control of the lead when Adamski scored a pair of free throws on the first possession of the fourth. The lead changed twice until Kalamazoo gained the lead for good when Grace Smith completed an old-fashioned three-point play with 3:49 left.

Olivia Savage scored on Albion's next possession to make the score 58-57 but that was as close as Albion would get down the stretch.

Payne extended her stretch of games with double-doubles with career-highs of 23 points and 20 rebounds. She scored on 9 of 18 shots from the field. In the process, Payne pulled into a tie with Amanda Yeager for sixth on Albion's career rebounding list with 566.

Nelson also achieved a double-double for the Britons, adding 10 points and 14 rebounds. Curry scored in double figures for the Britons with 14.

Claire Slaughter and Smith added 13 points apiece for the Hornets.

Albion will take most of the coming week to concentrate on final examinations and end of the semester course work. The Britons will play the second of three December games against MIAA rivals Dec. 12 when they travel to Grand Rapids for a date with Calvin College.
