Maura McAfee Eclipses 1,000 Points In Hope Women's Basketball Win Vs. Bethany, W.V.

Forward Maura McAfee reached a career milestone, and the nationally ranked Hope College women's basketball team claimed its Tip Off Tournament title with a second convincing win in less than 24 hours.

The Flying Dutch defeated Bethany, W.V. 102-44 on Saturday at DeVos Fieldhouse as McAfee became the 14th player in team history to reach 1,000 points in her career.

McAfee sits at 1,003 points over four seasons after being one of five Hope players in double figures. The senior from Midland, Michigan (Midland HS) finished with 12 points and earned Tournament MVP honors.

McAfee said she was happy to reach the milestone in front of Hope's fans.

"They're awesome. They're amazing people," McAfee said. "They will always stop you on the street and say 'Hey I saw your game the other day. You guys are doing great.' Things like those words of encouragement are always awesome. Just their loyalty to come out here in a snowstorm is great. You just don't see that at other places."

Hope (3-0 overall) also put senior guard Autumn Anderson of Dorr, Michigan (Wayland HS) and sophomore forward Jacquelyn Schwark of Fraser, Michigan (Lutheran North HS) on the six-player all-tournament team.

Schwark netted a game-high 16 points off the bench Anderson joined McAfee and freshman forward Francesca Buchanan of Grant, Michigan (Sparta HS) with 12 points apiece.

Sophomore guard Madison Geers of Scottville, Michigan (Mason County Central HS) added 10 points. She and sophomore forward Heather Randall of Novi, Michigan (Northville HS) shared team-high honors with eight rebounds.

The Flying Dutch, who beat Monmouth, Illinois 83-41 in Friday's semifinal, broke open the game by outscoring Bethany (2-1) by a 32-11 margin during the second quarter for a 54-27 halftime lead.

The game marked the seventh time Hope has eclipsed the 100-point mark since DeVos Fieldhouse opened in the 2005-06 season.

The Flying Dutch return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 2 when they host Trine in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener.
