Around the MIAA (through April 7 games)

Adrian (14-12, 2-4)

The Bulldogs had a tough week last week, going 1-5 over three days. The Bulldogs started the week off by getting swept by then No. 17 Trine on Tuesday, but hung with the Thunder in game one, losing 1-0 from a home run in the second inning. Adrian then split with Alma on Saturday, winning game one but losing game two in ten innings to the Scots. The Black and Gold’s week concluded with a sweep at the hands of Baldwin Wallace, falling on a walk-off single in game two.

Albion (7-21, 0-4)

Albion College hit .387 in its doubleheader at Kalamazoo last Tuesday, however, the Hornets offense responded time after time to send the Britons to 9-5 and 12-8 losses. Hitting for the Britons during the doubleheader: Estacia Martinez was 5-for-8 (.625) and scored three runs. Martinez's on base percentage improved to .700 with a pair of walks. Rebecca Rodriguez was 4-for-7 (.571) with two RBI and now owns an OBP of .667 after two walks. Lauren Beougher was 5-for-10 with two doubles and two RBI. Felicia Maximiuk and Eryn VanderVlucht were both 2-for-4 at the plate Claudia Sbaschnik was 4-for-9 (.444) with a double and four RBI .

Alma (13-13, 2-6)

The softball team had a roller coaster week. It started on Monday when freshman shortstop Hadyn Terwilliger (Mount Pleasant, Mich.) was named the MIAA Player of the Week for hitting two home runs in a split with Calvin. The Scots played eight doubleheaders, starting with five straight losses against Hope, Olivet and Adrian. The tide began to turn against the Bulldogs as both Hadyn and junior shortstop/outfielder Riley Terwilliger (Mount Pleasant, Mich.) hit home runs and Riley delivered the game-winning hit in the tenth inning of game two. Then on Sunday, Hadyn again came up clutch with the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to beat Thomas More. In addition, freshman pitcher Haley Ullrich (Elk River, Minn.) had 10 strikeouts in 11.0 innings against Adrian and first baseman Becca Spenner (Berrien Center, Mich.) hit the first home run of the freshman's career.

Calvin (17-5, 5-1)

Calvin swept Bluffton Thursday (April 4) with an 11-0 five-inning game and a 4-1victory in the nightcap. Abi Colon and Grace Quiggle both had home runs. Ellie Borst pitched a no-hitter in game one. Calvin swept Hope 9-2, 6-2 later in the week; Grace Stock had two home runs on the day. Kayla Groen was named MIAA Position Player of the Week.

Hope (14-6, 2-2)

The Hope College softball team went 4-2 on the week, defeating both Alma and Aurora twice and losing both ends of a doubleheader to Calvin. Freshman first baseman Kaelin Callow (Plainfield, Ill.) hit a walk-off single in Game 1 against Alma. Sophomore shortstop Savannah Dixon (Niles, Mich.) homered in each game against Aurora.

Kalamazoo (10-7, 3-1)

Kalamazoo improved its record to 10-7 on the season after a 4-2 week that featured a sweep of Albion and wins over Saint Mary's and Chicago. Sophomore pitcher Sammi Luzadre collected wins over Albion and Saint Mary's; Luzadre's seven victories is good for a tie for fourth in the MIAA. Ashley Schiffer used a strong week to bump the senior's batting average up to .400, good for fourth in the conference. The senior has 24 hits on the season including a home run and five doubles. Hayleigh Alamo hit the second home run of the senior's season and leads Kalamazoo with 18 RBI. The Hornets will look to improve on their 3-1 MIAA record with games against Alma and Trine before battling with non-conference opponents Defiance and Manchester to finish the week.

Olivet (14-12, 3-5)

The Olivet College softball team had a 2-4 record last week. The Comets lost both games of a doubleheader at Saint Mary's, swept a home doubleheader from Alma, and ended the week with two close losses to nationally-ranked Trine. For the week, Kinslea Blouin posted a .625 batting average to go along with a double, a triple and two home runs for a 1.188 slugging percentage. Blouin's two home runs now has 14 career round-trippers to break Olivet's all-time record. Kaylee Clothier batted .417. Jazmin Hildebrand hit two home runs and drove in a team-best seven runs. In the circle, Gracie Boyle pitched two complete games to earn the wins against Alma.

Saint Mary's (7-14, 4-2)

The Belles opened conference play with a 4-2 record last week. Saint Mary's swept visiting Olivet before splitting with both No. 11 Trine on the road and Kalamazoo at home. Krystal Harris (.474) and JoAnna Keilman (.409) each posted batting averages above .400 on the week. Keilman had team-highs of three doubles and five RBI. Mandi Hettinger went 2-1 on the week with a 1.50 ERA, no walks, and a complete-game win at Trine. Hailey Hisaw added a complete-game shutout win over Kalamazoo.

#11 Trine (19-3, 5-1)

A jam-packed week saw the Thunder take the field for four doubleheaders including three against MIAA opponents. The team showed up despite the full schedule finishing the week with a 7-1 record including sweeps of Adrian, Olivet and Manchester University. Junior Hannah Kampmann (St. Paul, Minn.) led the way in the circle for the Thunder finishing the week undefeated with 21 strikeouts and just one walk in four appearances.
