The Trine softball team took two from Hope Wednesday afternoon in the Thunder's final Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association contests of the season to finish the year with a 14-2 record and capture the 2019 MIAA Softball Championship.
Trine started Wednesday with an 8-1 win, as Hannah Kampmann gave up five hits while striking out five in a complete-game effort that secured the MIAA title outright for the Thunder. Trine then added an 11-6 victory over Hope, with a six-run sixth inning proving to be decisive; the Thunder hit back-to-back home runs to ignite the rally.
The Thunder, recently ranked No. 6 nationally by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, will be the top seed and host for the 2019 MIAA Softball Tournament, set for May 2-3 at Trine's SportONE/Parkview Softball Field.
The 2019 title is the first for Trine since sharing the 2016 championship with Alma; Trine was a four-time outright champion from 2012 to 2015. Since joining the MIAA, Trine has won nine MIAA regular season titles.
The 2019 MIAA Softball Tournament will feature a four-team, double-elimination format. The bracket for the tournament will be released once all MIAA competition is completed later this week.
