Milestone Reached In Hope Softball's MIAA Tourney Loss At Alma

Centerfielder Autumn Anderson became the third Hope College softball player to reach 200 career hits, but Alma held on to edge Flying Dutch 2-1 in the second round of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament on Thursday.

Hope (23-17 overall) returns to action at noon today at Alma with an elimination game against Trine. The Flying Dutch beat Trine 3-2 in Thursday's opener.

Today's winner advances to play Alma (31-7) in Friday's championship round.

Anderson went 2-for-3 with a double and a single. The senior from Dorr, Michigan (Wayland HS) has 200 hits in her career, including 49 this season.

Only two Hope players have more: Kylee Brouwer with 228 (2005-08) and Jess Regnerus with 212 (2005-08).

The Flying Dutch threatened in the seventh. Pinch-runner Alex Knorp of Livonia, Michigan (Stevenson HS) scored from second on a one-out RBI single from leftfielder Noelle Jackson on Grand Blanc, Michigan (Grand Blanc HS). Alma, however, retired Hope's final two batters.

Losing pitcher Kate Laverty of Eaton Rapids, Michigan (Eaton Rapids HS) scattered six hits and two runs over six innings. Laverty (10-5) struck out one.
