Hope Softball Team Wins Showdown With Saint Mary's On Senior Day

Seniors Jenna Maury and Kate Laverty delivered on Senior Day as the Hope College softball team swept visiting Saint Mary's 2-1 in eight innings and 7-0 on Saturday.

The Flying Dutch improved to 20-14 overall and 9-3 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play after taking two in the matchup of the league's third-place teams.

Hope leads fourth-place Saint Mary's by two games and fifth-place Kalamazoo by three games with two MIAA doubleheaders remaining. The top four teams in the regular-season standings advance to the league tournament.

In Game 1, Maury, from Lawton, Michigan (Lawton HS) drove home senior Autumn Anderson of Dorr, Michigan (Wayland HS) with a walkoff single to left-center.

Anderson was hit by a pitch with one out in the eighth. She moved to second a groundout and third on a single from second baseman Sierra Mutschler of Wayland, Michigan (Wayland HS).

Maury gave Hope a 1-0 lead in the third with a RBI single that plated first baseman Shay Pinhey of Ann Arbor, Michigan (Pioneer HS).

Reliever Katie Singer of Howell, Michigan (Hartland HS) tossed one inning of scoreless relief for the win. Singer (3-2) took over for starter Sydney Jones, who yielded just three hits and two walks over seven innings.

Laverty, from Eaton Rapids, Michigan (Eaton Rapids HS) came through in Game 2 with a five-hit shutout. Laverty is now 10-4 on the season.

Rightfielder Sammi Adams of Griffith, Indiana (Griffith HS) gave Hope a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with a RBI double that scored Sierra Mutschler after she reached first on a throwing error. Anderson scored on Mutschler's bunt. 

Hope returns to action on Wednesday, April 27 with a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader at Calvin.
