Hope Softball Caps Florida Trip With Ninth Win In 12 Games

The Hope College softball team downed Stevens Institute 9-2 on Friday to complete a 9-3 start to the season in Clermont, Florida.

The Flying Dutch (9-3 overall) bounced back from a morning 2-0 loss to Bowdoin, Maine.

Against Stevens Institute, leadoff hitter and centerfielder Autumn Anderson of Dorr, Michigan (Wayland HS) led a 12-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. She had a triple and two singles to raise her batting average to .452.

The first batters in Hope's lineup combined to bat 7-for-12 with four RBIs and five runs scored.

Rightfielder Sammi Adams of Griffith, Indiana (Griffith HS) recorded two singles, two runs scored and one RBI.

Second baseman Sierra Mutschler of Wayland, Michigan (Wayland HS) collected two doubles, one run scored and one RBI.

Winning pitcher Kate Laverty of Eaton Rapids, Michigan (Eaton Rapids HS) scattered four hits and two runs over four innings. Laverty (5-0) struck out four.

Hope lost to Bowdoin after a scoreless tie was broken with back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the seventh. The Flying Dutch were limited to five base runners, including four hits.

Losing pitcher Sydney Jones of South Lyon, Michigan (South Lyon East HS) struck out six while allowing six hits. 

Hope returns to action on Monday, March 27 with a 3 p.m. nonleague doubleheader against Aurora, Illinois at Wolters Stadium.
