Hope Softball Shuts out Loras, St. Scholastica

Three Hope College softball pitchers combined for 14 scoreless innings during two wins on Thursday in Clermont, Florida. 

The Flying Dutch improved to 8-2 overall by defeating Loras, Iowa 6-0 and St. Scholastica, Minnesota 2-0.

Sydney Jones of South Lyon, Michigan (South Lyon East HS) fired a six-hit shutout against St. Scholastica. The righthander struck out eight and walked one while raising her record to 3-2.

Starter Kate Laverty of Eaton Rapids, Michigan (Eaton Rapids HS) and reliever Maddie Bellew of Jackson, Michigan (Jackson HS) blanked Loras on six hits.

Laverty, a senior, allowed five hits and one walk over six innings. She struck out five. Bellew allowed one hit in the seventh.

Against Loras, the Flying Dutch supported their pitchers with a four-run first and a two-run second.

Second baseman Sierra Mutschler of Wayland, Michigan (Wayland HS) cracked a two-run double in the first and added another RBI in the second.

Shortstop Jenna Maury of Lawton, Michigan (Lawton HS) capped the first-inning rally with a two-out, two-run single.

Against St. Scholastica, Mutschler provided all the offense the Flying Dutch needed with a two-run single in the first.

Hope wraps up its spring break trip Friday with games against Bowdoin and Stevens Institute.
