Trine's Searles Sets Division III Softball Triples Career Mark

Trine outfielder Carly Searles is now the NCAA Division III softball career record holder for triples.

Searles, a senior from Levering (Petoskey HS), set the Division III record Saturday with her 44th career triple in the Thunder's 9-0 victory over Becker, Mass. at the Dot Richardson Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. Her hit came in the first inning and led to Trine's first run of the contest. Earlier in the day, she had tied the record with a three-bagger in Trine's 4-2 win over Johnson & Wales, R.I..

Searles broke the previous Division III record of 43, set by Donnalynn Cross of Cortland State, N.Y. from 2008-11. She became the MIAA's career leader in triples her sophomore year, and her 16 three-base hits in league play are nearly twice as many as her nearest competitor.

Searles tied the Division III single-season record for triples last year with 17. She needs seven triples to tie the all-time NCAA record for all divisions of 51, held by South Carolina's Tricia Popowski from 1988-91.
