Three From MIAA Receive NCAA Softball Tournament Bids

Three teams from the MIAA will compete in the NCAA Division III softball tournament that gets underway later this week.

MIAA champion Trine will be joined by Hope and Alma, who received at-large bids when the 62-team Division III field was announced Monday.

Trine (37-3), which won the MIAA tournament in dramatic fashion Friday with an 8-7, 8-inning victory over Alma, will head to DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. for its regional. The Thunder will meet Thomas More, Ky. (26-15) in its first-round contest.

Hope, which finished tied for second in the MIAA with Alma during the regular season, will take a 27-9 record to its regional at Lake Forest, Ill. The Flying Dutch will meet Wisconsin-Whitewater (36-7) in its opening-round game.

Alma, which came within one out of winning the MIAA tournament before finishing second to Trine, will head to Bloomington, Ill. for an opening-round regional matchup against host Illinois Wesleyan (36-8).

It’s the third time in MIAA history that the conference has sent three teams into the Division III softball tournament. In 1995, Hope, Calvin and Alma reached the NCAA tournament, while in 2009, Alma, Trine and Adrian received bids to the tournament.

The regional round will be held May 8-10, with 16 regional winners advancing to the super regional round May 15 and 16. The national championships will be held May 21-26 at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va.
