Alma Shuts Out Lake Forest In NCAA Super Regional Opener

Morgan Stratton fired a four-hitter for her third shutout of the NCAA tournament, and Alma went on to defeat Lake Forest, Ill., 3-0, in game one of the Division III Super Regional at Lake Forest Friday.

The Scots (29-15), now need only one victory on Saturday to win the Super Regional and advance to next week's national championships, while Lake Forest must win twice on Saturday.

Stratton, who led the MIAA in earned run average in league play this season with a microscopic 0.36 ERA, continued her strong pitching in the circle for the tournament as she struck out eight and walked only two. She has allowed only one run in 29 innings for the tournament, with that run being unearned.

The Scots jumped into the lead in the third. Marie Zill walked, then took second on a single by leadoff hitter Anna Couture. Back-to-back sacrifice bunts by Kayla Merice and Devin Olah plated Zill with the game's first run, and Mary Brooks delivered an RBI single to give Alma a 2-0 lead.

Alma added an insurance run in the sixth. Brooks walked and was replaced by pinch-runner Kelsey Spencer. A groundout advanced Spencer to second. Then with two out, Cori Witham blooped a single to center to score Spencer for a 3-0 Scots lead.

Stratton allowed a leadoff single in the seventh, but set down the next three batters, striking out Whitney Leiderman for the final out.

Game two of the Super Regional will begin at 2 p.m. Michigan time, with the if-necessary game to follow at 4:30 p.m.
