Around the MIAA
Adrian
The Adrian College men's cross country team competed at the Wolverine Twilight race hosted by the University of Michigan-Dearborn in New Boston, Mich. on Friday, Aug. 31. The men came in 5th place with a score of 120. Freshman Robert Diebold finished third overall with a time of 16:03.7
Albion
Opening the season ranked third in the region by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, the Britons took first place in the Sodexo Grizzly Invitational. Led by a quartet (Kiehl Smith, Kody DeHaan, Trey Cucuro and Adam Ditri) finishing among the top 10 runners, Albion was 49 points better than the second place squad from the University of Mount Union. The rest of the Britons top five ran in a tight pack with just 12 separating the second and fifth runners.
Alma
The Alma College men's cross country team began their season with a fourth-place finish at the Jeff Drenth Invitational last Friday. The men finished behind Michigan State, Central Michigan and Hillsdale. Senior Justin Jones (Cedar Springs, Mich. / Cedar Springs) posted the best time (16:24.32) on the men's side.
Calvin
The Calvin men's cross country team will head into its 2018 campaign ranked 22nd in the preseason Division III Top 25 poll conducted by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association.
Hope
The Hope College men's cross country team will begin their 2018 campaign Saturday, Sept. 15, after inclement conditions cancelled the Vanderbilt Invitational Sept. 1.
Kalamazoo
The Kalamazoo College men's cross country team will toe the line for their 2018 season opener at Calvin's Knight Invite Sept. 8.
Olivet
The Olivet College men's cross country team hosted three in-state junior colleges -- Jackson, Kellogg and Lansing -- for the 2018 Comet Opener Aug. 31 at Broadway Acres Golf Course in Charlotte. The first Olivet runner to cross the finish line was sophomore Kyle Markley who was eighth of 33 runners in the 5K race with a time of 16:56.81.
Trine
The Trine University men's cross country team claimed first through fifth place individually en route to winning the Wittenberg University Invitational in Springfield, Ohio, Aug. 31. Trine finished with a team score of 15 points, claiming 10 of the top 15 individual times. Sophomore Derek Miller (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview) led the Thunder through the 5K course with a top overal time of 16:08.4 out of 70 total competitors.
