Around the MIAA
No. 36 Adrian
The Bulldogs will start their outdoor campaign Saturday, March 30 at the Hanover Invitational.
Albion
Kiehl Smith was at the front of a field of 44 runners for the 800 meters as the Albion competed outdoors for the first time this season in a meet at Birmingham Southern College. Smith completed his race in 1:55.82, finishing nearly a second ahead of the runner up. Kejuan Frazier did well in the throwing events, finishing second in the shot put (15.13 meters, 49’ 7 ¾”) and fourth in the discus (39.41 meters, 129’ 3”). Richard Annorat gained third place in the 110 hurdles (15.49) and Andrew Wittland was third in the 5,000 meters (15:43.05). Albion is back in action Saturday, March 23 at the Polar Bear Invitational.
Alma
The Scots will begin the 2019 outdoor season Satuday, March 23 at the Polar Bear Invitational.
Calvin
The Calvin men's Track and Field team competed in the Rhodes College Track & Field Invitational March 15-16. Sophomore Justin Varineau had the race of the day for the Knights, winning the 10,000 meters in a time of 31:14.88. The Knights return to action on Friday, March 22 as they compete in the Island Meet in Golf Shores, Alabama.
No. 46 Hope
Another thrilling finish in the Hope-Calvin rivalry unfolded Saturday, some 650 miles away from West Michigan. The Hope College men’s track & field team edged the Knights by six one-hundredths of a second to win in the 4x800 relay at the Rhodes College Invitational in Memphis, Tennessee. The non-scoring meet was the first outdoor meet of the spring. Junior Owen Ljung, junior Brenden Jones, senior Collin Thomas, and freshman Nick Hoffman topped a field of nine with a time of 7:56.41. Calvin finished in 7:56.47. The Flying Dutchmen were runner-up in two events. Senior Ben Turner took second in the pole vault after clearing 4.26 meters. Sophomore Jared Lowe took second in the high jump.
Olivet
After a week of training and community service, the Olivet College men's track & field team opened the outdoor portion of its schedule at the Alan Connie/Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Sophomore Tyler Peck was first in his heat and second overall in the open 400-meter run with a time of 51.74 seconds. Freshman Kyle McDowell finished fourth in the open 800-meter run with a time of 2:01.90. McDowell also ran the 400-meter run in 50.15 seconds, which is the top time in the MIAA this spring.
