Around the MIAA

Adrian

The Bulldogs won the Defiance College Invitational and set three new school records in the process. Last week’s MIAA Men’s Field Athlete of the Week Nicholas Jackson set a new AC indoor record in the high jump at 6’8”. Jackson is now fourth in the country. John Hamilton broke the school’s triple jump record at Defiance, with a distance of 44’0.5”. The last record to fall was the 4x200 relay, comprised of Donavan Ervin, Derek Plitt, Jordan Davis, and Randy Fry. The team ran a time 1:30.40 for the new record. The Bulldogs had one more PR as Denzel Tinsley set a new personal best in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.26, moving Tinsley into 19th in the nation.


No. 41 Albion

Albion student-athletes achieved first place performances in four events as the Britons finished third in the Dr. William Taraschke Team Challenge at Baldwin-Wallace University. Albion and Ohio Wesleyan engaged in a duel for second place. The Battling Bishops edged the Britons by six points, 117-111. Otterbein was the top team with 182 points. Kejuan Frazier was first in the shot put (49’ 2 ¼”), while Richard Annorat won the high jump, clearing the bar at 6’ 6 ¾”, and he was fourth in the 55-meter hurdles (7.90 seconds). Adam Ditri raced past the field in the 3,000 meters (8:51.39), and Albion scored 14 points in the event as Aaron Weimer was fifth. Jephte Jean-Claude, Trevor Knowles, and Marcus Freeman finished in the top five in the triple jump. Jean-Claude was the winner, sailing 44’ 2 ¾”.

Alma

The Scots finished third at the Defiance Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 26). Distance runner junior Luke Reed (Benzonia, Mich.) took first in the 3000-meter run and sophomore Nolan Rowland (Battle Creek, Mich.) won the pole vault event with a four-meter jump. 


Calvin

The Knights took fourth place at the Dr. William Taraschke Team Challenge on Saturday at the Lou Higgins Recreation Center. The Knights had some key performances on the day. In the weight throw senior Brendan VanHouten finished second-place with a throw of 56-2. Junior Jonathan Walt finished third place in the pole vault with a vault of 12-11 1/2. Finishing in second place in the 5,000 meter run was junior Addison Smith with a time of 15:09.78. Junior Tyler Johnson claimed the third-place spot in the mile run crossing the line in a time of 4:18.91. Claiming the top spot in the 800 meters was senior James Jeninga with a time of 1:57.70. Coming in second was senior Luke Peterson who recorded a time of 1:50.84. The Knights return to action on Friday as they compete in the GR Sports Hall of Fame meet at Aquinas College.


Hope

Nathan Schloff and Owen Ljung ran away with first-place performances for the Flying Dutchmen at Aquinas College on Friday. Schloff won the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:8.48. Ljung led a 1-2-3 Hope finish in the 800 meters with an effort of 1:58.73. Senior Collin Thomas finished second in 2:01.03, and junior Ty Hergenreder had the third-fastest run at 2:01.56. Hope placed third as a team.


Olivet

The Comets were sixth at the Defiance (Ohio) College Invitational. Junior Noah Bailey took first-place in the triple jump with a leap of 46 feet, 2-1/2 inches. Sophomore Jacob Smith achieved a school-record mark of 51 feet, 3 inches in the shot put. The performance placed Smith second of 32 throwers in the event. The distance medley relay team of Kyle Markley, Aaron Wilson, Brandon Bell, and Jaden Costa finished first with a time of 11:44.32.


No. 32 Trine

Trine finished 10th out of 17 teams as the lone non-scholarship school in the field at the Grand Valley State University Open. Nick Zak improved upon his own school record in the mile with a time of 4:17.51. He bettered the previous all-time mark in the mile run by a full second set during the 2016 season.
