Around the MIAA
Adrian
The Adrian College men’s indoor track and field team had a strong showing to open the 2019 campaign at the Tiffin Open last weekend. Sophomore jumpers Nicholas Jackson and Daz Lawrence both hit 2.02 meters in the high jump, with Jackson taking home the title and MIAA Men’s Field Athlete of the Week Honors. Both Jackson and Lawrence are currently sixth in the nation in the high jump. Sophomore sprinter Donavan Ervin set three PRs, in the 60 and 200 meter sprints and in the long jump. He is currently 24th in the country in the 60 meter. Senior sprinter Randy Fry is currently 10th in the 60 meter and 17th in the 200 meter, and fellow senior Jordan Davis set a new PR and school record in the 60 meter hurdles with an 8.15. Davis is currently sixth in the nation for the 60 meter hurdles race.

Alma
The Alma College track and field team competed at the Doug Hansen Open at Saginaw Valley State University last week and several Scots earned top-ten finishes. The men's 4x400 relay team of junior Payton Hirschenberger (Freeland, Mich.), sophomore Timothy Minier (Battle Creek, Mich.), freshman Zane Stanton, and senior Jared Fleming (Williamston, Mich.) took seventh place with a time of 3:37.02. Senior Justin Jones (Rockford, Mich.) finished eighth in the men's 3000-meter run, crossing the finish line at 8:55.43.
Calvin
Calvin was in action at the GVSU Mike Lints Alumni Open last Saturday. Calvin piled up the points in the distance events to help build a fifth place total of 49.2 points. Highlighting the meet for Calvin was junior Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Ill.) who won the 3,000 meter run with a career-best time of 8:33.29 which currently ranks 14th on the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field performance list. In the 5,000 meter run, sophomore Noah Cummisford (Mequon, Wis.) was second (15:54.85), senior Jonathan Randall (Hopkington, Mass.) third (16:01.29) and sophomore Charlie Kornoelje (Grand Rapids, Mich.) fourth (16:02.45). Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team of junior Jacob Veenstra (North Haledon, N.J.), sophomore Matthew Blanker (Grand Rapids, Mich.), senior Luke Peterson (Holland, Mich.) and senior James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) were fifth (3:29.59). In the weight throw, senior Brendan VanHouten (Grand Rapids, Mich.) had a career-best throw of 56-1 to place sixth. His throw ranks 24th on the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field list. Sophomore Bryce Reynolds (Byron Center, Mich.) had a career-best throw of 54-8 ¾ to place seventh. He currently ranks 32nd on the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field list. Calvin returns to action next Saturday when it competes at the Baldwin-Wallace William Taraschke Invitational.
Hope
Justin Freeman's victory in the 60-meter dash at the Mike Lints Open, hosted by Grand Valley State University on Saturday, led the Hope College men's indoor track & field team to a sixth-place finish at the 15-team event. Freeman clocked a time of 6.93 and in doing so, broke his own school record of 6.99 set in 2018. Junior Owen Ljung placed second in the 600 meters with a time of 1:22.5. Hope finished with 40.4 points.
Olivet
The Olivet College men's indoor track & field team competed at the Saginaw Valley "Doug Hansen" Open. Junior Noah Bailey broke the record in the long jump, leaping 22 feet, 5-1/4 inches, for a fourth-place finish. Sophomore Jacob Smith achieved a school record in the shot put with a fifth-place mark of 48 feet, 1/2 inch. The 4x400-meter relay team of Bailey, Chris Womack, Kyle McDowell and Tyler Peck was fourth-fastest of the "A" relays with a time of 3:25.43.
