All-MIAA - Men's Tennis - 2022

FREELAND, Mich. -- At the conclusion of the 2022 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) men's tennis regular season, head coaches from the MIAA's eight member institutions that sponsor men's tennis voted on All-MIAA awards.

Kalamazoo senior Ian Yi became a two-time MIAA Most Valuable Player this season after previously earning the title in 2019.  He led the Hornets to a perfect league mark of 7-0 for the championship title after concluding the season with his own unblemished records of 5-0 at No. 1 singles and 7-0 at No. 1 doubles with partner Peter Fitzgerald.  Yi is a three-time First Team All-MIAA honoree.

Alma senior Brendan Murdie was voted as the Dr. Allen B. Stowe Memorial Award recipient.  This honor is in memory of Dr. Allen B. Stowe, longtime professor and tennis coach at Kalamazoo College, and takes the following into consideration: contributions to the team, leadership quality, and exemplification of ethical virtues and sportsmanship.  Murdie led the Scots in both doubles and singles wins.  He is graduating with a 3.96 grade-point average and is described by his coach as always having a positive, smiling face for the team.

Senior Danny McGarry of Albion received the Dr. Lawrence Green Award this season.  This award is a scholar-athlete award named in memory of Dr. Lawrence Green, longtime tennis coach at Hope College.  In order to be considered, individuals must be a senior and must be a letter winner of the team for two years.  McGarry has a cumulative GPA of 3.91 as a double major in Music Performance and Combined-Engineering Physics, with a minor in Applied Mathematics.  He plans on attending graduate school for Aerospace Engineering next year.  McGarry completed research on thrust vector control in rockets over the summer last year and recently presented his research at Albion's research symposium.  He followed that up with his two hour long senior recital a week later, while also juggling conference play through it all.

Yi and teammate Casey Johnson both earned All-MIAA accolades for the third time in their careers.  Hope's Jacob Burkett and Cameron Coates, along with Kalamazoo's Gabe Vidinas, all became two-time All-MIAA honorees.
