Hope Men's Tennis Serves Up Win Vs. Scranton

A sweep of doubles play paved the way for the Hope College men's tennis team to a 7-2 win against Scranton, Pennsylvania Tuesday in Orlando, Florida.

The Flying Dutchmen jumped to a 3-0 lead with wins of 8-1 from the No. 1 doubles team of freshmen Michael Kiley of Muskegon, Michigan (Mona Shores HS) and Andrew Klein of Augusta, Michigan (Kalamazoo Christian HS), of 8-4 from the No. 2 team of freshmen Mark VanderStoep of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS) and Christian Rhoades of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS), and of 8-2 from the No. 3 team of junior Sam Kreps of Holland, Michigan (Holland HS) and freshman Justin Folkert of Hamilton, Michigan (Hamilton HS).

Hope went on to take four of the six singles flights from Scranton.

At No. 1 singles, Kiley defeated Keller McGurrin 6-1, 6-3.

At No. 3 singles, Klein beat Matt Prendergast 6-0, 6-1.

At No. 4 singles, Rhoades topped Brian Harkins 6-4, 6-0.

At No. 6 doubles, Folkert outlasted Austin Manmiller 6-3, 4-6, 10-4.

The Flying Dutchmen (1-7 overall) dropped their morning match to Grinnell, Iowa 9-0.

Hope returns to action on Wednesday with a 3:30 p.m. match against Birmingham Southern.
