Calvin Holds On to MIAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championship Crown

The Calvin University men's program won the 2024 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Swimming and Diving Championship.  The Knights concluded the championships with a total of 1,002 points. 

Hope College graduate student Bailey Smith opened the final day of competition by reclaiming the 1650 free title for a third time with a first-place finish (16:01.21).  Freshman teammate Alex Pierce placed second after clocking in at 16:10.03 and was followed by Alma College sophomore Eli Mull in third place (16:13.99).

Junior David Bajwa of Calvin won the 200 back with a record-breaking time of 1:45.42.  Kalkman broke the previous record of 1:48.98 from last year by over three seconds.  Sophomore teammate Charles Platt claimed the runner-up position with a time of 1:47.25 and Kalamazoo College junior Ben Pickrel finished third (1:51.33).

Hope claimed the top-two finishes in the 100 free.  Senior Ben Catton won the title with a time of 44.15, followed by junior Colin Kalkman in second place (44.70).  Senior Knight Forrest Peterson rounded out the top three after finishing in 44.84.

Calvin sophomore Caleb Gemmen defended his championship title in the 200 breast with a time of 2:00.71.  Hope claimed the next two spots on the podium with junior Christian Dunaitis in second place (2:02.13) and senior Reilly Lagrand in third (2:06.57).

Calvin senior Julien Camy broke his own record from 2022 in the 200 fly after finishing the race in 1:47.45.  Classmate Eric Chimes was the runner-up with a time of 1:49.16.  Sophomore teammate Tim Hays claimed third place (1:50.51).

The Flying Dutchmen tallied the final win of the night with a time of 3:07.08 in the 400 free relay.  The first-place quartet included sophomore Bishop Carl, senior Conor East, graduate student Bailey Smith, and junior Conner Halberg.  Another Hope quartet clocked in at 3:08.06 for second place and was trailed by Calvin in third place (3:08.16).
