Calvin Wins 2023 MIAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championship

The Calvin men's program won the 2023 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Swimming and Diving Championship.  The Knights concluded the championships with a total of 1,117 points. 

Hope senior Bailey Smith opened the final day of competition by reclaiming the 1650 free title that he earned in 2021 with a first-place finish (16:01.24).  Calvin sophomore Joshua Seidelman placed second after clocking in at 1609.01 and was followed by Hope sophomore Conner Halberg in third place (16:19.14).

Sophomore Colin Kalkman of Hope defended his championship title in the 200 back with a record-breaking time of 1:48.98.  Kalkman broke the previous record of 1:49.01 which was set by Kalamazoo's Paul Ellis in 2009.  Calvin sophomore David Bajwa claimed the runner-up position with a time of 1:50.17 and sophomore Flying Dutchman Dallas Fisher finished third (1:50.45).

Calvin claimed the top-four finishes in the 100 free.  Senior Noah Holstege notched the victory after clocking in at 44.12 and was followed by classmate Jacob Heeres in second (44.26), senior Bryce Miner in third (45.37), and junior Corey Campbell in fourth (45.89).

Freshman Knight Caleb Gemmen won the 200 breast in a time of 2:01.21.  Hope claimed the next two spots on the podium with sophomore Christian Dunaitis in second place (2:03.95) and senior Ted Lockett in third (2:05.64).

Calvin freshman Timothy Hays notched a victory in the 200 fly after finishing the race in 1:49.32.  Senior teammate Julien Camy was the runner-up with a time of 1:49.87.  Hope junior Conor East claimed third place (1:50.70).

Albion senior Justin Huttenlocher scored a 493.60 to earn the top spot on the one-meter board.  Senior Sam Ankley of Kalamazoo earned a 489.30 for second place and was followed by Hope junior Ewan Tiongson in third place with a 437.80.

Calvin tallied the final win of the night with a time of 2:58.40 in the 400 free relay.  The first-place quartet included Bryce Miner, Noah Holstege, Charles Platt, and Jacob Heeres.  Hope clocked in at 3:01.97 for second place and was trailed by Albion in third place (3:05.54).
