19 MIAA Student-Athletes Earn All-America Honors from CSCAA

Nineteen individuals from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) were recognized as All-Americans by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) on March 20, following performances at the 2022 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

As of 2017, the performance criteria for selection is as follows:  NCAA relays and individuals finishing first through eighth will receive First Team honors.  NCAA relays and individuals finishing ninth through 16th will earn Second Team accolades.

On the women's side, Hope freshman Sara Kraus led the conference with three individual All-America honors and one All-American relay.  Kraus received First Team honors in both the 100 back and the 200 back for top-eight performances, while earning Second Team accolades in the 200 IM and the 200 medley relay.  Also in the Second Team All-American 200 medley relay were Alyssa Kerman, Emma Schaefer, and Madeline Tessin.

Both Hannah Fathman and Mattie Smith became two-time Second Team All-Americans at the NCAA Championships.  Fathman earned All-America recognition in the 50 free, Smith in the 100 breast, and both swimmers in the 200 medley relay.  Sage Gettings and Sarah Griffiths were also named Second Team All-Americans for the 200 medley relay.

On the men's side, fifth-year senior Julian Iturbe tallied three individual and four relay All-America accolades.  Iturbe was tabbed a First Team All-American after top-eight finishes in the 50 free, the 100 free, the 400 free relay, and the 200 free relay.  Also swimming in the First Team relays were Jacob Heeres, Noah Holstege, and Forrest Peterson.  Iturbe earned Second Team status in the 200 free, the 200 medley relay, and the 800 free relay.  Peterson competed in both the 200 medley relay and the 800 free relay.  Heeres and Julien Camy received Second Team All-American status for the 800 free relay, while Holstege and Bryce Miner competed in the Second Team All-American 200 medley relay.

Calvin's Jordan Bergsma earned a spot on the All-America Second Team following his eighth-place finish in the one-meter dive.

Hope sophomore Ben Catton claimed Second Team All-America honors after his performance in both the 100 fly and the 400 medley relay.  Joining Catton with Second Team honors for the 400 medley relay are Conner Halberg, Colin Kalkman, and Jack Muller.

The awards mark the first awards since the 2019 season. In total, seventy-four men and seventy-five women earned first-team individual honors with another 124 men and 125 women receiving first-team relay honors. An additional 213 athletes (105 men, 108 women) earned second-team honors.

The awards were determined by a nationwide vote of CSCAA-member head swimming coaches and head diving coaches.

All-Americans are selected on the basis of their finish at the NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA or CCCAA Championships AND a team's current membership with the CSCAA.  Only student-athletes who competed in their championship finals are eligible for All-America Honors.
