Calvin University claimed the 2021 MIAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championship title after tallying 1,054 points.  Hope College placed second with 906 points, followed by Albion College in third place with 738.5 points.

Calvin senior Julian Iturbe was voted the 2021 MIAA Most Valuable Swimmer for the third-consecutive year and Hope junior Kamaron Wilcox was selected as the 2021 MIAA Most Valuable Diver for the second-straight season.

Thursday Recap

Calvin led after the first day of events with 516 points and was followed by Hope in second (449 points) and Albion in third (397 points).

Calvin opened the morning session by notching a victory in the 800 free relay (6:43.05).  Trevor Sparks led off the winning relay, followed by sophomore Jacob Heeres and senior Julian Iturbe, and junior Bryce Miner as the anchor.  The Knights then concluded the morning events with a win in the 200 free relay (1:21.22).  The quartet included junior Noah Holstege, who broke the conference record in the 50-free leg (19.78), freshman Corey Campbell, senior Sam Norman, and sophomore Jacob Heeres.  Sophomore Julien Camy came out on top in the 100 fly with a time of 48.33.  Iturbe broke his own conference record in the 500 free with a time of 4:27.22 (previous record of 4:28.14 from 2020).  Senior Colin Murphy earned the fifth-straight win of the day for the Knights in the 200 back (1:51.76).  Heeres clocked in at 44.67 in the 100 free for a first-place finish.  Iturbe once again had a record-breaking performance, this time in the 200IM with a time of 1:49.09 (previous MIAA record of 1:49.98 from 2017).  Freshman Jordan Bergsma earned 470.85 points on the one-meter board for a first-palce finish.  Calvin concluded the day's events in the top spot of the 400 medley relay (3:18.30).  The winning quartet included Holstege as the lead off, Iturbe, Camy, and Heeres as the anchor.

Senior Jake Huttenlocher won the first event for the Brits over the weekend in record-breaking fashion with a time of 2:00.14 in the 200 breast (previous MIAA record of 2:00.77 from 2019).

Saturday Recap

The Knights started the second day of competition with a win in the 200 medley relay (1:29.69).  The quartet included junior Noah Holstege, senior Julian Iturbe, sophomore Julien Camy, and senior Sam Norman.  As the relay's leadoff, Holstege broke the conference-championship record in the 50 free with a time of 19.78 (previous record of 20.18 from 2011).  Iturbe earned his third individual victory of the weekend with a record-breaking performance in the 200 free (1:37.39 | previous MIAA record of 1:38.34 from 2011).  Holstege notched a victory in the 100 back with a time of 49.15, followed by a win in the 50 free (19.96).  Calvin concluded the night with a record-breaking performance in the 400 free relay (2:58.00 | previous record of 2:59.26 from 2009).  The winning quartet included Iturbe, Holstege, junior Trevor Sparks, and Heeres.  Not only was the relay record broken, Iturbe broke the MIAA 100 free record as the leadoff with a time of 43.80 (previous record of 44.02 from 2011).

Hope sophomore Bailey Smith earned the first victory for the Flying Dutchmen in the 1650 free.  His time of 15:40.40 broke the previous MIAA championship record of 15:42.35 from 2016.  Freshman Conor East finished the 200 fly in a record-breaking time of 1:49.40 (previous record of 1:50.32 from 2009).  Freshman Jake Peterson claimed the third win for the Flying Dutchmen with a time of 4:04.46 in the 400IM.  Junior Kamaron Wilcox finished first on the three-meter board with a score of 501.25 points.

Albion senior Jake Huttenlocher broke his second MIAA record of the championship in the 100 breast prelims with a time of 54.46 (previous MIAA record of 55.01 from 2000), prior to notching a victory in the finals with a time of 54.84.
