WAVERLY, Ia. – The Calvin men's soccer team claimed a 5-0 first round NCAA III Tournament victory over Greenville University Friday night.
Calvin advances to the regional finals on Saturday where it will face Gustavus Adolphus at 5 p.m. (CST) on the campus of Wartburg College. Gustavus Adolphus defeated host Wartburg 3-1 in the second first round game Friday evening.
In its win over Greenville (11-8-4), Calvin (17-2-1) scored just 2:13 into the match as a corner kick was sent to the feet of senior Evan Nieuwenhuis (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) off a pass from senior Reed Vanderlugt (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS). Nieuwenhuis made no mistake on the chance, whipping in a left-foot shot to give Calvin the early 1-0 lead.
Calvin used another corner kick to take a 2-0 lead in the 40th minute as senior Aguma Muhumuza (Baton Rouge, La./The Dunham School) headed in a corner from junior Alex White (Lake Bluff, Il./Lake Forest Academy).
In the 55th minute, the Knights grabbed a 3-0 lead on a goal by senior Chris Schau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) with senior Zach Flowerday (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) grabbing the assist on the play.
Sophomore Jonah Meyer-Crothers (Sylvania, Oh./Sylvania Northview HS) converted a penalty kick in the 80th minute for a 4-0 Calvin lead.
Sophomore Hans Pruis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) then scored in the 87th minute on a feed from freshman Osiel Peguero (Santo Domingo, Distrito Nacional The Kiski School).
Calvin held a 19-6 shots at goal advantage in the win. Senior Daniel Wunder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) went the distance, making four saves and posting his 39th collegiate shutout.
COACHES COMMENT: "Great to get a win in the NCAA Tournament," said Calvin head men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "Credit Greenville. They were organized and very well-coached. Coach Swift is one of the good ones. But our guys created chances and did a good job keeping them off the board. Credit to everyone playing a role today in helping to get a result. We'll need to recover quickly in order to bring our best tomorrow in hopes of advancing."
