Calvin University senior Drew Van Andel has been named the Division III Men's Soccer Scholar All-American of the Year by the United Soccer Coaches while also landing a spot on the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America First Team.

A native of Grand Haven and a graduate of Grand Haven High School, Van Andel recently completed a standout career with the Calvin men's soccer program.

In the classroom, Van Andel carried a 3.57 grade point average as an undergraduate while majoring in environmental health and conservation. He is now currently a graduate student at Calvin.

Van Andel is the second individual in four years from Calvin to receive the honor as Trent Vegter was so honored in 2017.

Earlier this fall, Van Andel was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team. He has been a four-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.

On the pitch, Van Andel was a four-year starter at centerback. He was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-America First Team earlier this month while also receiving All-Central Region honors from the United Soccer Coaches

He was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player this fall and landed a spot on the All-MIAA First Team for a fourth consecutive season. Van Andel helped Calvin capture the 2021 MIAA regular season title this fall while also earning a bid to the NCAA III Tournament with the Knights finishing 17-4-2 overall and reaching the Round of 16 of the NCAA III Tourney.

He tallied three goals this fall and concluded his Calvin career with eight goals, four assists and 20 points.

Van Andel was granted an additional fifth year of eligibility due to the Covid-19 pandemic that wiped out the 2020 fall season but allowed Division III schools to play a spring 2021 regular season without using a year of athletic eligibility. In receiving a fifth year, Van Andel became a member of five MIAA regular season championship teams. He is the only player in MIAA history to do so.

"What an incredible accomplishment for Drew," said Calvin men's soccer head coach Ryan Souders. "It caps what was already a remarkable career. Drew has worked incredibly hard on the field and in the classroom and has modeled so well what we want from our athletes. We're proud he's ours!"

Over his five-year career, Van Andel helped the Calvin men's soccer program produce an overall won-loss record of 90-11-4 that included five MIAA regular season titles, three MIAA Tournament crowns, four trips to the NCAA III Tournament, three trips to the Sweet 16, two trips to the national semifinals and one trip to the national championship final.
