Calvin's Drew Van Andel and Oliver Akintade Named United Soccer Coaches Division III All-Americans

UNITED SOCCER COACHES DIVISION III ALL-AMERICA TEAMS

Calvin senior Drew Van Andel and sophomore Oliver Akintade have been named United Soccer Coaches Division III All-Americans.

Van Andel has been named a First Team United Soccer Coaches Division III All-American while Akintade has been named a Second Team United Soccer Coaches Division III All-American.

Van Andel and Akintade are both receiving Division III All-America honors for the first time.

A native of Grand Haven and a graduate of Grand Haven High School, Van Andel completed a standout career two weeks ago.

A centerback on defense, Van Andel was the MIAA's Most Valuable Player this fall. During the year, he was named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week once.

Van Andel helped Calvin post 14 shutouts. He also scored three goals.

Currently a graduate student at Calvin, Van Andel came back for a fifth year this fall and became the first player in MIAA history to be a member of five MIAA regular season championship teams. He was a four-time All-MIAA First Team selection. He finished with career totals of eight goals, four assists and 20 points.

Akintade is a native of Lake Forest, Illinois. He is a graduate of Lake Forest High School.

A forward, Akintade had 10 goals, eight assists and 28 points. Three of his goals were game-winning goals.

He was named to the All-MIAA First Team earlier this month, receiving the honor for a second straight season. He received MIAA Offensive Player of the Week honors once during the season.

Van Andel and Akintade helped the Calvin men's soccer team produce an overall record of 17-4-3 this fall which included the program's 15th consecutive MIAA regular season championship.

In addition, the Knights received a bid to the NCAA III Tournament for the seventh consecutive year and captured a regional title with a first round win over the University of Rochester and a second round win over Ohio Wesleyan. The Knights completed their season with a 1-0 defeat to the University of Chicago in the Round of 16 of the NCAA III Tournament.
