Calvin Men's Soccer to Play in NCAA Tournament Round of 16

Calvin University and Trine University represented the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) in the 2021 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament over the weekend.  Calvin (17-3-2) will play the University of Chicago (14-5-1) in the Round of 16 on Friday, November 19, at 4:30 p.m.

The national quarterfinal is slated for November 20 at the University of Chicago.


How it Happened - Calvin

Calvin swept both of its opponents in the first two rounds of the championship over the weekend.  In the First Round game versus Rochester (N.Y.) on Friday, the Knights won 4-0.  Mason Smith put Calvin on the board at the 12:32 mark, with an assist by Zach Flowerday.  Exactly 11 minutes later (23:32), Smith dished out the assist for a goal by Aguma Muhumuza.  Sam Twigg scored back-to-back goals in the second half, with an assist by Chris Schau on the second goal, to conclude the game.  Calvin goalie Daniel Wunder had five saves.  Twigg totaled a game-high six shots, while him and Smith each had two shots on goal.

On Saturday, the Knights notched a 1-0 victory over Ohio Wesleyan.  Seamus Kilgallon scored the lone goal for the team, with an assist by Smith, at the 7:35 into the second half.  Wunder totaled five saves over the contest.  Kilgallon led the squad with three shots on goal, while Schau had a team-best four shots and Twigg tallied two shots on goal.

 


How it Happened - Trine

Trine was upended 5-1 by Otterbein in the First Round of the tournament on Saturday.  The only goal in the first half was by the Cardinals 10:50 into the game.  Otterbein went on a 3-0 run to start the second half, but Brian Morris ended their scoring spurt with a goal 78:22 into the game.  Otterbein scored with less than 10 minutes left for a 5-1 win.  Thunder goalie Troy Saylor recorded three saves.  Morris and Tyler Murphy each had one shot on goal.
