All-MIAA - Men's Soccer - 2021

FREELAND, Mich. -- At the conclusion of the 2021 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) men's soccer regular season, head coaches from the MIAA's eight member institutions that sponsor men's soccer voted on All-MIAA awards.

Calvin senior defender Drew Van Andel was voted the 2021 MIAA Most Valuable Player, after helping the Knights to a perfect conference record of 7-0 to clinch the regular-season title.  In starting all seven league contests, Van Andel helped defensively in holding conference opponents to only two goals.  As of this season, he is a four-time All-MIAA recipient.

Alma senior Hunter Nash earned the Dr. Marvin A. Zuidema Award.  Presented to a senior selected for contributions to team play, leadership qualities, demonstration of ethical virtues and excellence in athletics and academics, the Marvin Zuidema Award was established in 1999 in honor of the late Dr. Marvin Zuidema, longtime men's soccer coach and athletic administrator at Calvin.  Nash has been a team captain for the Scots for two years.  He has been a great leader and helped create a culture that truly operates like a family.  Nash is graduating a semester early and has already accepted a job with Aon as a Commercial Risk Strategist within the Construction Services Group and recently launched his own company.  Additionally, Nash has been serving as the National SAAC Representative.

Freshman goalkeeper Gavin Houtkooper of Kalamazoo was voted the Newcomer of the Year.  Houtkooper beat out a talented senior for a starting spot on the team.  He concluded league play with a .786 save percentage, 11 saves, a 0.62 goals-against average, only three goals against, and two shutouts.

Calvin's Sam Twigg and Van Andel, along with Kalamazoo's Mikey Schwartz, all became four-time All-MIAA honorees this season.  Four players are now three-time All-MIAA recipients including Calvin's Aguma Muhumuza, Mason Smith, and Daniel Wunder, and Kalamazoo's Alex Wallace.  Calvin's Oliver Akintade, Hope's Brandon Fles and Jackson Strabel, and Trine's Tyler Murphy are all two-time All-MIAA players.
