FREELAND, Mich. -- At the conclusion of the spring 2021 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Men's Soccer Tournament, head coaches from the MIAA's eight member institutions that sponsor men's soccer voted on All-MIAA awards.
Hope senior Ty Dalton was selected as the MIAA's Most Valuable Player, after the midfielder helped the third-seeded Flying Dutchmen to an overall record of 5-1-1 and their first MIAA Tournament title since 2013. Dalton secured the tournament victory by scoring the game-winning goal in overtime versus Trine for a 2-1 win in the final contest.
Calvin freshman forward Oliver Akintade was voted Newcomer of the Year after assisting the Knights to the MIAA regular-season title and an overall record of 7-2. Akintade started all games this season and concluded league play first in goals (5) and second in both points (11) and shots (21).
Albion senior Chad Martin earned the Dr. Marvin A. Zuidema Award. Presented to a senior selected for contributions to team play, leadership qualities, demonstration of ethical virtues and excellence in athletics and academics, the Marvin Zuidema Award was established in 1999 in honor of the late Dr. Marvin Zuidema, longtime men's soccer coach and athletic administrator at Calvin.
Four players have received All-MIAA recognition for the third time in their collegiate careers, including this year's First-Team honorees Dalton, Kalamazoo's Mikey Schwartz, and Calvin's Sam Twigg and Drew Van Andel. Calvin's Aguma Muhumuza, Mason Smith and Daniel Wunder, Hope's Ryan Flynn, and Kalamazoo's Ben Meschke and Alex Wallace are now all two-time All-MIAA honorees.
