Around the MIAA

Adrian (11-5-1, 3-2-1)

Adrian went 2-0 on the week to secure a guaranteed spot in the six-team MIAA tournament. The Bulldogs took down Trine 3-1 on Tuesday and Alma 2-0 on the road Oct. 26. In Tuesday's matchup Brad Squires posted three points on a goal and an assist, while Logan Thomas recorded his first collegiate goal. Garrett Miller also had a goal in the win over the Thunder. On Saturday Dayton Rush posted three points on a goal and an assist, Miller two points on a goal and Thomas a point on an assist. Goalkeeper Spencer Brown accumulated seven saves over the span of the two contests, five in his shutout against the Scots.


Albion (7-8-1, 2-4-0)

Albion took a step toward qualifying for the MIAA Men’s Soccer Tournament by gaining a 3-1 result over Olivet while a steady shower fell at Alumni Field Oct. 26. Joan Tomas played a role in all three Albion goals. He scored his first goal at the collegiate level and assisted on the others. Micah Cross and Spencer Moeggenberg also scored their first goals at the collegiate level for the Britons.


Alma (5-10-0, 2-4-0)

The Scots dropped a conference matchup 2-0 to the Adrian Bulldogs on Saturday (Oct. 26). Adrian scored in the second minute, then added another in the 57th. Garrison Mast (Grand Haven, Mich.) made three saves in his final home match as a Scot. Three players shared the lead in shots for Alma. The program recognized its ten-member senior class prior to the game.


No. 2/2 Calvin (17-1-0, 6-0-0)

Calvin clinched a share of its 13th consecutive MIAA regular season title with a pair of conference victories last week. The Knights defeated Olivet 9-0 and Kalamazoo 1-0. Hunter Olson had two of Calvin's goals in the win over Olivet while seven other Knights scored in the win. On Saturday, Calvin picked up the only goal of the game in the first half on a cross that deflected in off a defender. The game marked a meeting of regionally-ranked teams as Calvin was ranked No. 1 in the Great Lakes Region while Kalamazoo was ranked fourth. Freshman goalkeeper Daniel Wunder collected his fourth straight shutout victory in the win over Kalamazoo. Ranked second nationally, the Knights have now clinched the top seed for the upcoming MIAA Tournament.


RV/NR Hope (12-5-0, 5-1-0)

Hope clinched the No. 2 seed in the MIAA Tournament with a pair of victories last week: 4-1 at Alma on October 22 and 6-2 at home vs. Trine on Saturday. Against Alma, Forwards Logan Bylsma and Alec Belcastro scored six minutes apart in the first half to give the Flying Dutchmen a lead they would not relinquish. Against Trine, Logan Bylsma registered his second career hat trick with three first-half goals for Hope. It was the fourth time a Hope soccer player has netted three goals in a game at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.


Kalamazoo (9-3-2, 3-2-1)

The Kalamazoo College men's soccer team fell on Saturday afternoon to No. 2 Calvin by a final score of 1-0. The lone goal of the match for Calvin came off an own-goal by a Hornet defender in the 28th minute. The Hornets wrap up their regular season with a match at Olivet on Wednesday, Oct. 30. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.


Olivet (4-11-1, 1-5-0)

Olivet lost twice last week, falling to nationally-ranked Calvin, 9-0, and MIAA-rival Albion, 3-1. Junior Dean Failer scored the Comets' lone goal on a PK against Albion.


Trine (5-9-0, 1-5-0)

Fell to Adrian (3-1) and Hope (6-2)...Three different players each scored goals for Trine in Ivar Arroyo, Trevor Towghi and Nooh Aljabaly...Austin Hensley saw most of the playing time at goalkeeper and had 13 saves for the week.
