Around the MIAA

Adrian (9-5-1, 1-2-1)

Men's soccer moved to 9-5-1 (1-2-1 MIAA) after splitting a pair of conference matchups last week. On Wednesday, the Bulldogs took down the Britons on the road, 2-0, with goals by Garrett Miller and Fadi Sobh. On Saturday, Adrian fell 2-0 at home to nationally-ranked Calvin. Over the course of the contests, Spencer Brown posted eight saves.


Albion (6-7-1, 1-3-0)

Alma (5-8-0, 2-2-0)

The Scots fell to two of the conference's top teams last week, losing 4-0 to No. 2 Calvin on Wednesday and 3-1 to Kalamazoo on Saturday. Kyle Farmer (Greenville, Mich.) scored Alma's only goal in the 19th minute against the Bulldogs from an assist by Kyle Costigan (East Tawas, Mich.). Senior Garrison Mast (Grand Haven, Mich.) made a total of 17 saves in both games.


No. 2/2 Calvin (15-1-0, 4-0-0)

Calvin went 2-0 last week, defeating Alma 4-0 Wednesday at home and Adrian 2-0 Saturday on the road. Sophomore Sam Twigg had two goals and two assists in the win over Alma. Senior Ian Adams had the game-winning goal at Adrian. Adams currently leads the NCAA III statistics in assists (14). Freshman goalkeeper Daniel Wunder picked up both shutout victories last week.


Hope (10-5-0, 3-1-0)

Hope moved into second place in the MIAA standings with two victories last week: 10-0 at Olivet Oct. 16 and 2-0 at home vs. Albion on Saturday. Against Olivet, The Flying Dutchmen scored five times in each half as they received goals from eight different players and an own goal from the Comets. Freshman midfielder Nic Kubert (Rochester Hills, Mich.) scored in each half and led the Flying Dutchmen with two goals. Kubert also assisted on a second-half goal from sophomore forward Caleb Schoon (Ludington, Mich.). Against Albion, Logan Bylsma's (Hudsonville, Mich.) eighth coal of the season put Hope up 2-0 late to secure the win. The Flying Dutchmen grabbed a 1-0 lead with 2:55 remaining on the first half when senior midfielder Isaac Braak set up junior midfielder Ty Dalton (Rockford, Mich.) with a cross. It was Dalton’s third goal of the season. The shutout was Hope’s third in a row and ninth of the season. 


Kalamazoo (8-2-2, 2-1-1)

The Hornets were victorious in both matches this week as they took down Trine 1-0 on Wednesday before defeating Alma 3-1 on Saturday during Kalamazoo's Homecoming. Ben Meschke led the way on offense with two goals. The junior forward now has nine goals in the 11 games he has played in. Alex Wallace and Hayden Strobel also tallied goals during the week, as well. Travis Barclay and Aidan Hurley assisted on Hornet goals this week. Freshman Sean Ellis tallied three saves in the shutout against Trine. Sophomore Luke Kastran collected four saves on Saturday in the win over Alma. Kalamazoo returns home for two matches this week against Albion on Tuesday and Calvin on Saturday.


Olivet (4-9-1, 1-3-0)

Olivet suffered losses in both MIAA games last week. The Comets were shutout by Hope College before losing 2-1 in overtime at Trine (Ind.) University. Freshman Jesus Escalante scored the Comets' goal in the 89th minute to send the game to overtime against Trine.


Trine (5-7-0, 1-3-0)

Defeated Olivet in overtime, 2-1...sophomore Trevor Towghi scored the game winning goal in the first overtime period...sophomore Brian Morris scored the other goal for the Thunder during the 38th minute.
