For the fifth consecutive year, Calvin men's soccer advanced to the Third Round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship with a pair of victories in the first two rounds. After defeating UW-Whitewater Nov. 16, 1-0, and St. Norbert Nov. 17, 3-1. Calvin will now take on North Park at the Holmgren Athletic Complex in Chicago, Ill.
Calvin (20-1-1) outshot UW-Whitewater 24-5 and had a 14-0 advantage in corner kicks, but the lone goal of the game came on an own goal in the 67th minute. The following day against St. Norbert, Calvin scored in the sixth, 14th, and 32nd minutes - with the latter goals coming from Sam Twigg - to cruise to the Second Round win.
Hope (14-5-1) dropped a 2-0 First Round contest to No. 18 Ohio Wesleyan Nov. 15. Hope's contest was scoreless until the 76th minute, when Ohio Wesleyan broke the draw; OWU quickly added a second goal in the 79th minute to put Hope on their heels. Hope goalkeeper Blair McCormick made five saves in the setback.
Kalamazoo (11-5-2) battled close against Centre in the Hornets' first NCAA appearance since 2001, but a Centre goal in the 52nd minute was the lone score in Kalamazoo's 1-0 setback. Kalamazoo goalkeeper Luke Kastran made four saves.
The 2019 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship sectional rounds will be contested Nov. 22-24, with the final four teams facing off in Greensboro, N.C. Dec. 6-7.
