GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.---Ian Adams, a senior at Calvin University, is the recipient of the Elite 90 award for the 2019 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship.

Adams, majoring in computer science, currently carries a 3.91 GPA. Adams was presented with the award during the NCAA III men's soccer banquet on Thursday evening in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Earlier this week, Adams was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team for the second straight year.

Adams is the sixth individual from Calvin to receive the Elite 90 award and the third member of the Calvin men's soccer program to do so. Other individuals to receive the accolade from Calvin include Alyssa Scholten (women's volleyball, 2016), John Admiraal (men's soccer, 2015), Brett Stoughton (men's swimming and diving, 2015), Brad Wassink (men's soccer, 2011) and Melissa Oosterhouse (women's tennis, 2011).

The Elite 90, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers.

The Elite 90 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's championships.

Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above who have participated in their sport for at least two years with their school. They must be an active member of the team, traveling and a designated member of the squad size at the championship. All ties are broken by the number of credits completed.

"This is such a special award for Ian," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "He's worked incredibly hard in the classroom. To see him recognized amongst the top of his peers if really cool. We're very proud of him."
