Around the MIAA
Adrian (8-6-0, 5-1-0)
The Adrian College men’s soccer team had two clean sheet victories last week, beating Trine on the road on Wednesday, 2-0, and Alma at home on Saturday, 6-0. Seniors Tad Davis and Zachary Roller had big weeks, with Davis scoring three times, including both game-winners and Roller also scoring three times and adding an assist. Davis was named Offensive Player of the Week and Roller picked up Defensive Player of the Week, marking the first time the Bulldogs have swept the POTW awards in program history.
Albion (6-5-4, 1-3-2)
Albion exploded for three goals in the Saturday victory at Olivet, its most in a match since Sept. 14 (a 4-1 victory over Wittenberg)…Moses Jatta (Sun Prairie, Wis.) produced his first goal at the collegiate level at Olivet…Erik Vanfossen (Muskegon, Mich./Muskegon Catholic Central) assisted on a goal by Alex Spratte (Canton, Mich.) in the draw with Kalamazoo last Wednesday and scored the game-winner at Olivet.
Alma (5-9-0, 2-4-0)
The Alma men's soccer team suffered a pair of losses to Adrian and Hope, but still remain in the MIAA playoff picture with one game left. Junior goalkeeper Garrison Mast (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) made a career-high 16 saves against the Bulldogs on Wednesday (Oct. 17). Junior midfielder Torsten Holland (Okemos, Mich./Haslett) scored his second-career goal on a penalty kick against Hope. An Alma win in the season finale against Trine would secure the fifth seed, but a loss could drop the Scots to the sixth seed or out of the postseason entirely.
No. 3/2 Calvin (14-1-0, 6-0-0)
Oct. 17: Defeated Olivet, 5-1. Bobby McCaw led the team with two goals. Oct. 20: Defeated Kalamazoo, 6-0, on Senior Night for eight seniors: Bobby McCaw, Trent Vegter, Jacob Witte, Daniel Norton, Lucas Albrecht, Reid Culberson, Luke Schepers, and James Jeninga. Mason Smith lead the team with two goals against the Hornets. The Knights clinched a share of the MIAA conference title with the win and Calvin sealed the top seed for the MIAA Tournament.
RV Hope (12-2-1, 3-2-1)
The Hope College men's soccer team split its MIAA matches last week - defeating Alma 6-1 at home on Wednesday and losing at Trine 1-0 on Saturday. Against Alma, Senior Christian Dault of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven HS) and junior Logan Bylsma of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville) each scored twice for the Flying Dutchmen. All of their goals came before halftime which Hope led 5-0.
Kalamazoo (4-10-1, 1-4-1)
The Kalamazoo College men's soccer team ended the week with a 0-1-1 record after road matches at Albion (1-1) and Calvin (0-6). Senior forward Collin Sweet scored the lone goal for the Hornets this week in the 25th minute vs. Albion. Freshman Luke Kastran made nine saves in net for Kalamazoo in the draw. Kalamazoo will wrap up its regular season schedule on Tuesday, Oct. 23 when they play host to Olivet at 4 p.m.
Olivet (5-10-1, 0-6-0)
The Olivet College men's soccer team lost two MIAA games last week. On Wednesday, the Comets fell to Calvin, 5-1. David Magallon scored the lone goal, and it was also the first goal that the Knights conceded in MIAA play. Olivet ended the week with a 3-2 setback to Albion. The Comets jumped out to a 2-0 lead on two set-piece goals by Carter Thomas and Joe Griffus. Magallon earned assists on both goals.
Trine (11-3-1, 4-2-0)
Trine split its week with a loss against Adrian (2-0) and a win against Hope (1-0)...Kyle Wainscott scored the lone goal for the Thunder.
