Around the MIAA
Adrian (6-6-0, 3-1-0)
The Adrian College men’s soccer team split a pair of conference matches last week, beating Albion at home on Tuesday and losing on the road to Calvin on Saturday. The 2-0 shutout of the Britons saw Dolan Bonkowski and Dayton Rush find the back of the net, with Rush’s tally tying him for the team lead in goals with three. Goalkeeper Spencer Brown picked up his third clean sheet of the year in the win. The Bulldogs were blanked themselves by the Knights, falling 4-0 to the MIAA favorites.
Albion (5-5-3, 0-3-1)
Albion scored twice, matching its highest production in a contest since Sept. 25, in its 2-2 draw with Hope College last Saturday. Erik Vanfossen (Muskegon, Mich./ Catholic Central) celebrated senior night with his first goal of the season, and Sam Coleman (Northfield, Minn.) secured his first point of the season with the assist on Jason Warras’ (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) equalizer.
Alma (5-7-0, 2-2-0)
The men's soccer team fell 6-0 in a pair of conference games to No. 3 Calvin and Kalamazoo last week. Senior goalkeeper Andrew Reid (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) had a career-high eight saves against the Knights. Junior midfielder Tanner Parrett (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) had two shots on goal against Olivet.
No. 4/2 Calvin (12-1-0, 4-0-0)
Calvin remained unbeaten in conference play, downing Alma 6-0 and Adrian 4-0 in league matches. The Knights are ranked second in the D3soccer.com Top 25 poll and fourth in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll. As a team, Calvin is ranked 13th nationally in goals-against-average and ninth in shutout percentage.
No. 22 Hope (11-1-1, 2-1-1)
The Hope College men's soccer team went 1-0-1 in MIAA play last week, defeating Olivet College 8-1 at home and tying Albion College 2-2 on the road. Junior Logan Bylsma of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville) scored three goals against Olivet and tied a Van Andel Soccer Stadium scoring record.
Kalamazoo (4-9-0, 1-3-0)
The Kalamazoo College men’s soccer team (4-9, 1-3) finished the week with a 1-1 record. The Hornets began the week with a 3-0 loss on the road at Trine before defeating Alma 6-0 at home. Freshman Nick Brandstadt led the offensive attack against the Brits by scoring his first three career goals and completing his hat trick in the 58th minute of the match. Ben Meschke added two goals and two assists for Kalamazoo in its first conference win.
Olivet (5-8-1, 0-4-0)
The Olivet College men's soccer team lost its two MIAA contests last week -- 8-1 at Hope and 5-0 at home to Trine. David Magallon scored the lone goal against the Flying Dutchmen. The Comets ended the week with a 3-1 win over Finlandia University. Magallon, Alistair Law and Charles Halt scored the goal. It was Halt's first collegiate goal.
Trine (10-2-1, 3-1-0)
Men's soccer won twice with victories against Kalamazoo and Olivet...Nooh Aljabaly scored five goals and an assist to lead the team.
