Calvin Advances to Sectionals of NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship

The Calvin College men's soccer team posted a pair of shutouts to advance to the Sectional Semifinal round of the 2018 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championships. The Knights advance to the final 16 for the fourth consecutive year and will face Penn State-Behrend Friday, Nov. 16 in a contest to be played at Case Western Reserve at 7:30 p.m.

The winner of Calvin/Penn State-Behrend will face the winner of Case Western Reserve and Kenyon in a Sectional Final set for Saturday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. The winner of that game will advance to the National Semifinal Nov. 30 at UNCG Soccer Stadium in Greensboro, N.C.

Calvin (19-1-0) started the NCAA Championship with a 4-0 First Round victory over Greenville Nov. 9 in a game that featured snow squalls at various times in the contest. Lucas Albrect scored in the 32nd and 43rd minutes to give the Knights a 2-0 halftime lead; Bobby McCaw (53rd minute) and Dillon Weldy (69th minute) added insurance strikes in the second half.

The Knights then benefitted from a one-player advantage late in their 2-0 Second Round win against UW-Platteville Nov. 10. Both teams battled scoreless through the first 72 minutes of play. Then, in the 73rd minute, a UW-Platteville player was issued a red card after committing a foul in the penalty box. While Calvin did not convert on the ensuing penalty kick, the Knights benefitted from the one-player advantage in the 74th minute when Jacob Witte shook the nets. Witte then added a second goal in the 84th minute.
