MIAA Men's Soccer Week #8 Wrap-Up

MIAA Men's Soccer Week #8 Wrap-Up

Just one team went 2-0 on the week in MIAA play in the penultimate week of regular season play for the conference. With the top seed secured, four teams remain to battle for three remaining positions; and with two games remaining, plenty is at stake next week as seeds 2-5 all could be knocked out of postseason play. Here are some of last week's highlights:

• #25 Calvin secured their 10th consecutive regular season MIAA title with their emphatic 5-0 victory over Alma Oct. 22. Jacob Witte (So., M, Grand Rapids, Mich.) had two goals and an assist in the win, while Stephan Hooker (Sr., M, Hudsonville, Mich.) scored the game-winner in the 17th minute on a penalty kick and added an assist later in the contest. The victory added to the Knights' 1-0 win over Olivet Oct. 19, where Mitch Stark (Jr., M, South Lyon, Mich.) converted the game's lone goal in the 14th minute.

• Adrian suffered a mid-week setback to Hope Oct. 19, 1-0 on the road, but recovered with a 2-1 home win Oct. 22 against Kalamazoo to keep a two-point lead for second place. With their 2-1 win over Kalamazoo Saturday, the Bulldogs notched their first 10-win season in program history; the team is also guaranteed its first-ever winning season. Mark Proctor (Jr.,M, Barrie, Ontario) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal against the Hornets in the 60th minute.
Next week: Adrian will take on Olivet at home and Alma on the road.

• Alma's Kyle Farmer (Fr., F, Greenville, Mich.) had a goal and an assist in the Scots' 3-0 win over Albion Oct. 19, but Alma was unable to move back into second place with a 5-0 setback to #25 Calvin Oct. 22.
Next week: Alma travels to Trine before hosting Adrian; the Scots were victorious against both teams earlier in the season.

• Albion split its week, bouncing back from a 3-0 loss at Alma Oct. 19 that dipped the team to fifth in MIAA standings with a 1-0 road win over Hope Oct. 22 to move back into fourth place. In the weekend win over Hope, Erik Vanfossen (So., M, Muskegon, Mich.) scored the match's lone goal in the 58th minute.
Next week: Albion hosts Calvin and heads to Kalamazoo.

• Kalamazoo started the week with a 3-0 win over Trine Oct. 19, where Kyle Hernandez (Sr.,, M, Holland, Mich.) scored twice early in the second half to seal the Hornets' victory. Kalamazoo was unable to keep momentum and move up in the MIAA standings with a tight 2-1 setback at Adrian Oct. 22. Hernandez struck again, this time in the game's second minute of play, but the guest squad was thwarted by the Bulldogs.
Next week: The Hornets will visit Hope before hosting Albion, as Kalamazoo aims to improve to 2-0 against both teams on the year.
