Forward David Porte delivered in overtime, so the Hope College men's soccer team remains in control of its postseason destiny.

The Flying Dutchmen won at Trine 2-1 on Wednesday to keep hold of fourth place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Standings all to themselves.

Hope (8-9-1 overall) can clinch the final berth in next month's MIAA Tournament on Saturday,Oct. 31 with a win or tie against Olivet in the regular-season home finale at Van Andel Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

Porte headed in the game-winning goal 1 minute, 52 seconds into the first 10-minute, sudden-death overtime. The senior from Mattawan, Michigan (Mattawan HS), recorded his team-leading eighth goal of the season off a cross from sophomore midfielder David White of Vernon Hills, Illinois (Vernon Hills HS).

Porte has scored four goals over the past four matches. The Flying Dutchmen won three of those matches.

Hope forced overtime after evening the score at 1-1 with 5 minutes, 54 seconds left in regulation. Freshman James Reymann of Columbus, Ohio (Worthington Kilbourne HS), struck from 18 yards out for his first collegiate goal.

Reymann scored just 1:16 after Trine (7-11-1, 4-9-1 MIAA) took the lead.

The Flying Dutchmen are 5-7-1 in MIAA play. They lead fifth-place Adrian by one game.

Adrian hosts second-place Kalamazoo on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs need to win and have Hope lose to Olivet to nab the tiebreaker over Hope and the MIAA Tournament berth.
